Is your friend a German who loves champagne, or someone who loves German champagne? because if it's the latter it simply doesn't exist. According to the French the grapes that grow champagne must be grown in Champagne, for it to be given that name.

Then again l'm sure you know that, so l'll simply shut up now. :yawn:

Nyetimber. It's is grown and produced on the chalk, like champagne. It also regularly beats the top champagne houses in international awards. We have it every year at Christmas as well taking it to Glyndebourne on our yearly treat [emoji898][emoji106]

Nyetimber is a lovely bottle.

Also, if you find yourself struggling to find a vintner of distinction there is always Tesco finest English sparkling wine; it's from Hush Heath and for the price it's very nice.

Thanks for the suggestions of brands but what I also need is a shop in Brighton, preferably near the station, which will be open post-match.

Nyetimber is about the best of the bunch. Classic Cuvee used to be vintage, but for a few years has been a blend. Their blanc de blancs remains a vintage wine. The Tillingdon Estate single vineyard is, IMO, their best wine, but it’s made in very small quantities - maybe 350 cases pa. it’s expensive though - you can get a great vintage Champagne from an artisan grower for the same price.

In the round, taking English wine as a whole, your friend is right to mock. There are exceptions, but they’re expensive for the quality.

I've never been a fan of fizzy wines, but used to get given a crate of Nyetimber every year, and I have to admit to snaffling a couple of bottles before I distributed the rest around the company, being the magnanimous individual I am.

Although this was a few years ago, I've had the occasional glass since and as a fizzy wine amateur, I would recommend it :wink:

Your best bet is probably the Sainsbury's on New England St. Shuts at 8pm. Not sure what they stock but they're bound to have something.

Butlers, at the top of my road, has the best selection of sparkling wine in town. I can escort you there if you fancy meeting up post-match.

PS others are right to big up Nyetimber
PPS you'll be able to get back into the centre of town within 15 minutes or so from Butlers (which is on Queens Park Road)
