It's unfair to expect Naylor to get much information beyond what the club feed him.

Before joining the Athletic he had spent (I believe) his entire career at the Argus, dealing with low-level stuff.in the bottom two divisions I presume that is similar to all the Athletic writers who are attached to bottom-half clubs or Championship clubs. They are not nationally-known names.

The big hitters whose names everybody knows like Daniel Taylor and Oliver Kay have had years at national newspapers to build up contacts here and in Europe. The Athletic were never going to hire writers with national experience to write about the Albion with the risk that we would go down after one season. If Naylor hadn't wanted to leave the Argus, it's likely they would have gone for someone cheap straight off a journalism course. At least Naylor knows the history of the club he writes about. .

Naylor's writing in the Argus was always pretty basic stuff, short on insight, and bereft of FLAIR - like the written equivalent of Andy Townsend's punditry.

I'm not sure why anyone expected his writing to be any different, under a different banner

Did you used to read John Vinnicombes reports and pieces Hansy ?

Not sure why people are criticising Naylor. It's quite obvious that the club dictate what gets printed so he's totally reliant of Camillin and co. I think he's done a great job in the circumstances.

Fascinated to see the Athletic circulation figures after their first year with all the deals, hope they are published soon.

I think if the club were dictating what he wrote then they would let him have better material. Where are the big interviews with Dunk, Propper, Trossard, etc?

As far as I’m aware Dunk’s refusal to speak to AN is still in effect.

I have no idea if any others in the squad are showing solidarity with the skipper.

Is it public knowledge why Dunk won't speak to Naylor, what did our once ace reporter do?

Yeah thats right - i dont know if you can but will try and post back on this thread if successful or not

That's my plan...

I share it with my dad currently and will be switching from my email to his for next year. There is also no protocol (like Netflix's screen limit) bar a line in the terms and conditions to stop you from sharing your account with as many people as you want.

Understand getting a mercenary for Bournemouth but surprised they made the absolutely dreadful Carl Anka their man for Southampton. Would have thought they were big enough to get a specialist and unlikely to go down. He is an absolutely appalling journalist and broadcaster, in my opinion like. What are your thoughts on him Nick?

Interesting The Athletic decided to get into Podcasts. I wonder how long it will be before we have to start paying for the Totally Football Show?!

I was always taught that if you can't say something nice about a person, don't say anything. So you may very well think that about Carl Anka, but I couldn't possibly comment.

The obvious move for The Athletic would have been to get Adam Leitch from the Echo, who is a top operator and covered Saints for 20 years. He knows the club and where various bodies are buried. But he wanted a change (can you blame him?) and is now press officer for Super League Triathlon.

Somewhat bizarrely, The Athletic have been advertising at me with this article, which doesn't seem to be behind a paywall: https://theathletic.co.uk/1985985/?...AcfqLWKGLlbjlyBB96d8fV_Di18JU_rlFrn5tPPKq-gCs which is a pretend interview between your man Carl Anka who is leaving the Southampton beat to cover Man Utd, and is being replaced by Dan Sheldon who seems to be moving from the local paper.

Wow, I'd pay to be a fly on the wall at Carrington press conferences this season. The difference between Southampton's three-men-and-a-dog sessions and what goes on pre-match at Manchester United might be a bit of a shock for young Carl. Ignorance and a love for the sound of his own voice is unlikely to impress Neil Custis and the rest of the Manc pack.

Karl Anka was funnier back in my days...

Looks like this automatically renews at full price after the discount year, mine is due to renew early September. Does anyone know if there is a discount option to renew or is it easier to cancel and rejoin with a different email address?

Crikey. I couldn't get very far through that. About as realistic a conversation as the one from my favourite advert. Isn't that right Warnie?

If that's the standard of journalist they are employing, then I shan't be parting with any cash to read their output. :lolol:

They're now doing 'breaking news' as well as the longer stories so moving away slightly from their original model.

After a year I finally bit the bullet and signed up to the trial a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if I'm going to stick with it yet, haven't been especially impressed yet but appreciate that might be because it's pre-season and less to talk about. I've found that because I listen to numerous football podcasts, a lot of the stuff on the Athletic has been covered already on the podcasts including on their own podcasts.

For anyone who prefers visual stuff, the channel Tifo football on Youtube are partnered with The Athletic. Of course they rarely touch upon The Albion but they did do a good video on Potter's tactics at the beginning of last season.

They are very in depth and it's also free. I spent a good few hours when I first discovered it watching videos.

...for 3 months, then £7.99 a month, so £59 for a year.

If you intend to stick around for longer than the 3 months, you'd be better off taking the DFF-like 50% offer that seems to be on permanently.
Whoops, I missed that - I thought it said 12 months at £1. Thanks for pointing it out. That'll teach me to rush into something during my lunch break!
