Is anyone else in awe of Blooms CB investment plan? When you look at the teams who look very much short of CB options (Everton, Leicester, Arsenal, Man City...) with the price level set so high with Maguire AND the growing importance of HGP. Bloom is finally going to make money back on his HUGE investment into the club over the years without leaving the team short. Proud to be a fan of such a club.

It's almost like there's a strategy and plan in place :) .........spot huge gap in the market for good CBs (especially HGPs), hence inflated prices, so grow a few so we have plenty, can keep the best 4/5 for ourselves and make a massive profit on the rest. If they have excellent seasons, and based on what we've just paid for Webster, Clarke and White could be each worth £20m by the end of the season and we'll have the option of cashing in on Dunk and bringing them back, or selling them on. Clever.

I think this may be linked to two things;

Firstly the realisation that if they could have nabbed Webster 12 months earlier, the potential saving/mark up was huge. Hence the Matt Clarke deal.

Secondly the new goal kick rule, is going to have a profound impact on the way that teams play. Centre backs, who may not have been the best footballers, could find themselves following keepers not comfortable with the ball at their feet, to somewhere on the sidelines.
Simplistically teams could set an objective, when pressing a goal kick to get the ball onto old cloggers left foot, where we can pressure him into a mistake.

This is ultra-smart thinking and a recognition that the double DD central defence axis is not going to endure forever. And given the increasing requirement for ball-playing defenders, it's likely to pay off big time both for our first team and the club's bank balance. We are indeed blessed with the sharp brains at the top of the Albion these days :thumbsup:

I didn't think it was going to be compulsory to pass a goal kick to someone inside the penalty area. Presumably teams will only do it when they think it's to their advantage.

There's a reason teams are so short of centre backs...

...we've got them all.

""We all dream of a team of centre halves, a team of centre halves....."

We've got one, the club currently has 11 on its books.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tony had his hands on a spreadsheet that clearly (to him) shows that centre backs represent the best value and attribute to the biggest points difference ratio.

All validated by Virgil Van D.

Is a fair point. Somehow how though, despite the number of highly qualified coaches a lot of similar tactics tend to creep in, based on adopting the latest thing from Barcelona etc. The Athletic had an interesting article about the promoted teams and I was particularly interested to see one of Sheffield United's tactics, which is to push their centre backs forward and wide to send crosses into the box. Not too many of the top sides doing that right now.
