Crofts back as player coach

Brighton & Hove Albion are pleased to announce the return to the club of midfielder Andrew Crofts, in a new player-coach role with the club’s under-23s.

Crofts has signed a two-year playing contract, solely to play in Simon Rusk’s under-23 side, as one of three permitted over-age outfield players, allowed under Premier League 2 rules.

At 35 he'll bring experience to the side, but never heard of someone signing up for the U23s exclusively at that age. Can understand it but just seems a bit odd in some way.

Really like that as a concept. Clearly the U23s isn't the same as league football. Playing and training with actual men seems a great way of bridging the gap.
Welcome back!!

Interesting idea, though - the U23s are likely to be pretty young and raw this season, as most of their top players have gone out on loan. Playing alongside an experienced player will be good experience for the youngsters too, learning off him as they play; exactly what they are likely to have to do if ever they get a shot of first team action.

Will he be allowed to play in the Checkatrade?

Really pleased with this. L.R was hard to replace due to his likability but the club have pulled out a cracking replacement. Another popular figure from the past.

Great bloke. His experience will be good for the youngsters, and with it being his third return, he obviously loves us.

Interesting comments there from the Yeovil Town manager. As this other ciderspace article discusses, Albion's announcement clearly states his Yeovil contract was cancelled so this wasn't a transfer as such. However, as the Yeovil manager mentions "..we have been in discussion with Brighton to ensure that we have come to an agreement around compensation in many forms ....", I'm guessing we can expect to see a loan or two and maybe a visit from an Albion side during pre-season in future....

Yeovil seem to think it was a transfer - https://www.ytfc.net/news/2019/july/news--crofts-departs/

"...........we wish Andrew well in his next role. This has been treated like any transfer ............................."

Loved that goal so much, that game was the start of our ride to the big time. Poyet’s arrival and a new stadium on the horizon

One of my favorite Albion goals, for all the reasons you say. That goal was the launch into a new era.

Great appointment, he was a very good player for us and I love this whole bootroom culture the club are creating.
