Do you use large oats or just muesli-sized ones?

Oh yeah, 170 fan for about 20 mins, less if you dont like crunchy edges.

Leave in the tray to cool a bit, and then cut into pieces whilst hot. Remove from pan before it cools too much and sticks to the greaseproof paper.

Top Tip: I use a shallow backing tray, about 1 inch deep lined with greaseproof paper. I heat sugar, butter and syrup in a saucepan until frothing, then add regular cheapo rolled oats (nothing fancy), stir well. Pour the mixture into lined tray and spread evenly, then place more greaseproof over the mixture and use another identical tray to press the mixture into flat compressed slab. Discard the extra paper and baking tray, and bake.

Warning these are ridiculously irresistible.

As the winner of the albourne village show ‘best flapjack’ for 3 years running, I feel that for once I have more than opinion to offer.

Golden syrup is just plain wrong...
Additives such as fruit or...god forbid...cornflakes are just plain wrong.

The correct recipe is...

Infinity foods jumbo oats
Butter
Demarera sugar
HONEY (preferably Payne’s)

The ratios are 2, 1, 1, 1

I go for

400g oats
200g butter, honey, sugar

Melt the butter, honey and sugar over a low heat, don’t boil, keep going until there are no sugar granules on your stirring spoon.

Add the oats and coat GENTLY

turn out into a circular 20cm tin (yes circular) with a disc of grease proof paper at the bottom

Pat down gently...don’t pulverise!

Cook in the oven (170 degrees fan / 180 degrees normal) for 17 mins

Leave to cool for at least 3 hours

Remove from tin and slice into 12 pizza style slices

Enter into village show

Win award!!

I've been eating cricket teas for over 50 years, as both a player and a coach.
For the last 20 I have avoided all cake in an impossible challenge to minimise waistline enlargement.
However, FLAPJACK cannot be ignored and, when prepared correctly, if the most delicious and enjoyable cricket-tea treat.
Must be firm enough to hold its shape, soft to the nibble and tasty.

Just like a decent pair of boobs I guess ....

Soggy bottoms not your cup of tea then? :D

The best flapjack in Sussex is served in Mithras House cafe (Brighton University). I am not a University employee but do go to their cafe for meetings most weeks since January. I’ll post a picture when back from my hols. Homemade, enormous, delicious and about £1.50 ish.

Oh yes sorry.

You are right I'm heading for the coma, t'is the mutts nuts of flapjack recipes.

As predicted the 3 hours was too long a wait, I'm proud to have got to 2 hours!

I had my first slice with a cup of tea.
Unfortunately that went before the kettle boiled.
A further slice of crispy and moist flapjack was cut, but that disappeared while the tea was too hot.
I finally got to eat a slicette with a cuppa and it was lovely.


Moral of the story:-

Make the tea first!

It won’t effect the taste, but it’s quite a thick slab of flapjack, so if you turn it out too soon it will disintegrate in the middle.

Ultimately, follow your flapjack instincts!

Fortunately it hasn't disintegrated, although little bits are crumbling off.

I guess next time I'll bake them and then go out :lol:

I only have one tip from a fellow recipe virgin.

Given the choice between medium sized pan and my rarely used 'big' pan, I under panned.

Everything was fine in the everyday pan, but I would have preferred the extra 'elbow room' that I'd have got from big pan.


Oh and don't piss around with the oats!

Can I just say this is NSC at it's very best. Absolutely loving how someone sees fit to post a certificate for winning the Albourne Village Show flap jack making competition. :lolol:
