Australia is technically an Island Continent. Well, that's what I was told in 1975 at Tarring High School.

Yep. And it's an island. And a country.

Had a huge disagreement with my geography teacher (Mrs. Green) about this almost 25 years ago and I'm still fuming.

On the Border
Strange how many people don't know the correct answer.

They must have all gone to the same school as the new Foreign Secretary

If Australia is a continent, what continent is New Zealand in?

No it isn't. Australia is a country which is part of Australasia.

SLIGHTLY ERRONEOUS.

It's actually a bit difficult to be certain on Australasia. Different references include NZ instead of the Island of New Guinea, whereas others (like Wikipedia) have it the other way around.

Australasia is a region consisting of the countries Australia and New Zealand (non-wiki version)

Continent of Australia
Australia (the country)
Island of New Guinea (which consists of Papua New Guinea, West Papua, Papua)
Tasmania

Region of Oceania
Australia
Island of New Guinea
New Zealand
Fiji
Lots of other islands - all the *nesia's

Here is a version which thinks that NZ is a part of Australasia, but New Guinea is not...
