I thought that was the whole point? Take on reporters who already have a relationship with the club, instead of recruiting newbies that don't know the first thing about them. For The Athletic to do it properly – and to get the desired amount of content required to justify the fee*– I would imagine they would need to have a dedicated stream/feed of news from every club (certainly in the PL and Championship), which is what Andy's been used to doing for the past however many years anyway.

If not, you'd just end up with the same old syndicated stuff you get from any old football website. Probably hence why it's free and TA is trying to charge for it :shrug:

Of course. Just interesting that he's started already before the Athletic is launched, and that he'll continue to use Twitter to push out news/comment.
Not surprised they're on a hiring spree of both club specialists (ie: Andy) but also some football generalists, according to Buzzfeed, - correspondents like David Ornstein.

Most of these reporters have taken a pay rise of around £20k, which is fair game. I can't see the model taking off, personally. Most people already pay for a fairly exhaustive list of content services. Wonder if it will go a bit like The Pool, and how fulfilled the writers will end up with their decisions.

Good for them! Not sure if the model is sustainable but always nice for good journalists to get a pay bump.

The Athletic seems to be doing well over this side of the pond for US sports and definitely has some quality writers.

interesting listen that. still can't see the business model working here, especially with local club reporting. wonder what naylor's log-in on nsc is? this is where he'll be getting his stories i'd guess...

I've been a subscriber since March (for baseball purposes). But whether I will automatically get the UK content I don't know.

I got a good opening offer via Ron Shandler's site, but I don't know whether I'll renew at full price. If they had a Paul Hayward or Martin Samuel, yes. But with all due respect to Oliver Kay and the rest ...

Interesting article on the new gig for Andy. First year sub only 29.99. Seems a steal, I pay nearly that in 6 weeks buying the Argus.

And yes people shouldn’t begrudge paying the price of a coffee for decent journalism.

The below article does raise the fear that this is a further attempt to kill local newspapers but I personally will buy it in addition to the Argus, not instead of, certainly as long as Brian Owen carries on

I pay $46.77 for a YEAR'S subscription to the digital version of the Argus, and the price hasn't gone up in 6 years.

There is already a decent article on there from Andy Naylor that was posted this morning discussing what happened last season and what the feel is for the season ahead under Potter.
