Let them have a parade, let them spout their rubbish, let them look silly for doing it - and if they're genuine ********s it'll put them on the world stage and only further serve to support gay pride and all it stands for. My point is not what they're having a parade for - it's the fact that if they want a bloody parade, let them have one!

I am a liberal minded fella, and opposed to all forms of intolerance.
But I have to say the shutting down of opposing view that has been happening over the past few years is wrong.
Freedom of speech is freedom of speech. Regardless how abhorrent that point of view may be.

I believe that we shouldn't view people in terms of group identity, we should view people as individuals. I think that a society which values the individual over the group has the best chance at eradicating prejudice and discrimination. I think that would be a good thing.
I also think that to the extent that you emphasize group identity you work against that, group identity is the foundation of prejudice and discrimination.
You’re trying to intellectualise homophobia with cod sociology. It’s bullshit and it butters no parsnips here.

You are intellectualising something you haven’t recognised as homophobia.
I didn’t say you’re defending prejudice, I implied you have misunderstood it.
You say people shouldn’t be judged by their group.
That doesn’t mean they should stop identifying as belonging to a group. It means ignorant ****wits should stop judging the group they identify with.
That’s like saying don’t go to Brighton games incase someone judges you and calls you a homo. Join your group. Identify with people with shared experiences. Support your team. Whether that’s football or your gay mates on a float.

I said that people shouldn’t be judged by group, and, that emphasizing group identity is counterproductive. The point being that it's easier to say "group identity is irrelevent", if you don't then hold a celebration of a particular group identity.
Maybe you don't agree. Fine. But what I said is a) easy to understand, and b) in no way shape or form, wittingly or unwittingly, supportive of homophobia.

The problem with the modern Pride marches is they have become far too over the top comercialised and sexualised in nature.
It's why many gay people won't attend as they feel it's not for them, they don't feel part of it.
I only have two gay people in my life and neither can relate to this culture that permeates the Pride marches nowadays.
For them it's become a commercialised drag show that doesn't represent them as regular centrist gay guys.
The straight pride guys would be surprised how much they have in common with the more centrist conservative people who are part of the LBGT grouping of people. If they got to know them.
It's why many gay people won't attend as they feel it's not for them, they don't feel part of it.

Some gay people are camp as a glass spider and like dressing in drag or donning hot pants and partying the day away on a float. Some don’t like to do that.
With all these differing preferences and diverse tastes It’s almost as if they’re like normal people ;-)

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's the tastes that are taking centre stage over the actual message.
Some fat hairy guy with his arse hanging out of his pants or simulating sex acts has as much in common with a regular gay as a cat does to a dog.
Pride marches are moving towards being just debauchery in public. Which if you want kids to be able to attend, is a turn off.
That's one opinion.
