Liverpool have condemned videos of their supporters causing trouble in Barcelona after fans were filmed pushing locals into a fountain

Trouble brewed in the city ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg. At least two videos surfaced on social media showing supporters shoving local people into a fountain in the middle of the popular Placa Reial square.

And chief executive officer Peter Moore took to Twitter to tell fans to treat the city better. 'We proudly sing that we've conquered all of Europe,' he wrote. 'But let's treat this beautiful city with the respect that it deserves, and act in a manner that is befitting of LFC.

'By all means have a good time, but we are Liverpool, and as such, let's visit here with grace and humility.'

There is surprise at Liverpool as their fans have regularly been praised for their behaviour when travelling around Europe this season.

Hundreds of travelling fans congregated in the square on Tuesday afternoon when the incidents occurred. It comes amid reports six Liverpool fans have been arrested in Catalonia.

Two workers at the Placa Reial hotel were allegedly assaulted and required medical attention, while two others suffered bruises, including a broken nose, according to reports in Mundo Deportivo.

Spanish newspaper Sport reports that fans threw objects at police and that nearly 3,000 cans of beers, to be sold around the busy square, have been confiscated.

But Liverpool fans have taken to social media to accuse the Spanish police of 'hugely over-reacting'.

Oh, those lovable cheeky scouse SCAMPS !

You say that but there's a definite reluctance on the media's part to have a go at Liverpool fans for some of the things they've done...

2 people (and we’re told they’re locals but look more likely to be fans) get wet in fountain.

So what?!! This is complete hyperbole. Yet another hysterical all football fans are hooligans story.

One of the blokes is collecting empty cups from the fountain. Because fans do that, don't they? Poor bloke's obviously going about his work and then finds himself flung in the water by a tosspot.

As my Father says (in a Northern accent, I'm afraid, like me..)

"In wi' t'booze, out wi' t'brain..."

*roughly translates as our English compatriots lacking the required thought processes to conduct themselves in an orderly manner after the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages.

I've frequently found scousers to be at the upper end of the volume and asshole scale when drunk, but in fairness it can apply to anyone and everyone no matter where they're from.

We can dismiss this as "Liverpool" if we want to put our head in the sand, but the reality is, and we ALL see it, is that once you get a group of otherwise decent people into a football crowd, whether inside or outside the ground, something go very wrong in their brain. I can't explain it, but we all see it all the time.

Whether it's abuse dished out, offensive chanting, or just being CU Next Tuesdays.

It's something about the tribalism of football that just unhinges peoples brains. It's disgusting.

True, only Liverpool's supporters don't seem to attract anywhere near as much opprobrium as other fans...

But all of that is a side issue. Who cares which fans get the most or least coverage, or do the worst things when they visit another City.

What on EARTH happens to people when they are at, or travelling to or from the football? What is it, and how do we stop it? Silly things happen all the time, not on this scale, but they happen. A bloke in front of me on the train Saturday, jumped on and punched the roof a few times in a rhythmic manner. Why? When else in his LIFE would he do that?

I just don't understand.

They do on this board. It's strange as a comment a few posts up claims there are lots of secret reds here. One could claim that those who keep posting, week after week, about their dislike of Liverpool and its people, are secret Man U or Chelsea. There seems to be around a thread a week having a go at Scousers lately. What next? West Indians, Pakistani people, Jews?

Bloody hell, are you really trying to compare slagging off scousers for misbehaving to racism?
