Following on from the greatest player BHAFC ever had thread and having just finished [MENTION=23620]Spencer[/MENTION]Vignes excellent Bloody Southerners book in which he recounts the tale of Peter Taylor (the first) going to try and sign Geoff Hurst I wondered what other nearly spectacular signings people have heard over the years?

And no I’m not interested in Kanchelskis, Owen, Lampard style lazy hack tales but things you might have heard back in the day from your own reliable source network which never happened.

Let’s keep it mildly interesting and say nothing from the last ten years?

I’ll give you Ian Wright and Roy Keane but are either anywhere near the calibre of Hurst? Not really.

Should have perhaps caveated by saying nothing from the last 15 years to make it at least mildly interesting.

Whoever Mullary had agreed from Manchester United in exchange for Lawrenson, before Bamber stepped in and sold him to Liverpool.
