But it's a saying, and in the context of horse racing, one of the horses always wins, so the number of horses is the same as the number of possible outcomes. It wouldn't make sense to look at the odds and think they're good in what's a 2 horse race, when there are 3 outcomes.

It was you that mentioned horses, and your analogy, you muppet:

Education of pork springs to mind.

"It's a two horse race"

"No. In reality it's three"

'It's not about horses though!"

"Er, but you said...... Never mind"

Does the 1/17 reflect betting markets sentiment/cash flow, plus the bookies making it nigh on impossible for a high stakes punter to make anything from lumping a large sum on the huge favourites?
Er, it's 17/1 against (with City 8-1 on). And yes, that'll reflect the betting markets, and their profits etc.

I'm pissed. Maybe my prediction has more substance than your gut feeling

So you’re predicting Chris will go gung-ho. I’m saying he’ll sit back and try and nick one. You’ve watched us play under Hughton for four years.

How can you possibly suggest that me predicting that Chris will do what he’s done consistently over that time period is based on a gut feeling???

Edit - ah I see now, the wisdom of alcohol!

My father in law got 18/1 last night on paddy power and price boosted it to 20-1

If there are two entrants (two legged, four legged, or in the case of a football team, 22 legged) in a contest, it is normally described as a two horse race. A "two horse race" is a respected vernacular expression for a competition with two contestants, be they horse or not. Liverpool and Manchester City, for instance, are currently involved in a two horse race for the PL championship - and anybody who tries to tell you it can't be a two horse race because Liverpool and Man.City aren't horses is likely to make a bit of an idiot of themselves. And even in a two horse race involving two actual real horses, there are still more than two possible outcomes, but it's still a two horse race.

Put a tenner on us at 14-1 with Skybet. Will help pay the cost of rearranging my holiday flights if we win!

Yes, there are only two possible outcomes.

For the purpose of betting odds, not really. And that's what this discussion is about - whether 17-1 is good value in respect of a two horse race - and with there being a fair chance that the result will be a draw, it's daft calling is a 2 horse race.

You disagree, that's fine.

I'll just have to stick to being pedantic then. It is a two horse race, by definition.

The problem with these odds is that City are almost unbackable to qualify, so we can't even put a disappointment insurance bet on. On the other hand, if we were Citeh fans, we could a tenner on Albion to go through and that would pay for half of next season's season ticket.
