Sounds exciting.

-----------------------

A PUB next to the cricket ground will be knocked down to make way for a new bar, restaurant and 40 flats.

The radical redesign of the County Ground in Hove will see the Sussex Cricketer pub and other buildings facing on to Eaton Road demolished.

The plans are being unveiled at the cricket club today (Monday) and people are invited to give their feedback

Architects have drawn up a masterplan for the future of the ground which has been at Eaton Road since 1872.

The plans, which are likely to take up to seven years to complete, include redevelopment of the southwest corner of the site, improving the main entrance to make it more visible and accessible.

Sussex Cricket chief executive Rob Andrew said: “Our goal is to make our club sustainable as an organisation and to effectively support our fantastic work across the whole of Sussex’s cricketing community for the long-term.

“Our proposed Phase 1 redevelopment of the south west of the Ground will provide us with the funds necessary to invest in the further ground improvements we need to ensure our future here in the heart of Hove.

"We have been here nearly 150 years and hope to remain here for another 150.”

The club said the first phase of the development would include "flexible commercial space suitable for medical or office use", and a "much more visible and attractive" entrance to the ground, with an additional service entrance to the west side of the site.

New 5-star conference and event space is also proposed at the southwest end of the pitch, with much improved facilities and up to date club offices will also likely move into the South Stand.

At the north end of the ground, new and improved seating for spectators is proposed, supported with bars, new toilets and refreshment facilities; and the existing hospitality rooms in the south east corner will be replaced with new seating stands.

Mr Andrew added: “Our facilities can be improved and there are many aspects which would make them more efficient and financially effective, allowing us to offer a better range of events and activities at the ground and supporting our community work across the county.”

The proposals can be viewed online at sussexcricket.co.uk from tomorrow (Tuesday) until March 12.

Knock down a decent pub to build some generic super-expensive flats? Sounds about right for this neck of the woods

A decent pub that’s nearly always empty, even on a Saturday night. 20 years ago it was Hove’s “go to” pub, along with Hove Place.

Improved seating is long overdue and welcome.

Just need a team in the Championship now to grace the upgraded ground

The County Ground could definitely do with some improved seating and a refresh of the bars. If the flats is the only way they can fund it then so be it.

The Spen Carma funds ran out some time ago so this type of self sustaining development is the only way to go. Not sure additional seating is necessarily required unless they're making some kind of push to reach the 10k needed to attract possible second tier ODIs?

Makes total sense. They're not using the real estate effectively at the moment.

Big question - can they get the bums on the seats to pay for it.

I think they should follow the Hants route.

Sell up the County Ground for housing development and stick a Rose Bowl type affair on either Toads Hole Valley, Waterhall or the field to the South of Village Way. I am sure planning won't be a problem for any of those sites :)

Nailed it. I knew people close to the club, they’ve been looking to do this for 10 plus years, to cash in on juicy luxury apartment prices.

Under BHCC’s black and white requirements, 40% of the new flats must be affordables, but the final development will not supply 16 affordables. SCCC will brow beat the planning officers with workings showing that such a scheme is unviable, that’s despite having a starting land cost of zero.

Haven't seen the plans in detail, but my first thought is that it would be a shame to lose the space. The Sussex Cricketers is not the best pub in Hove, but it does have a terrific beer garden.

All the talk of refurbishing the ground. Are there plans to make any significant changes to the match viewing part of it or is it minimal cosmetic changes being talked up to disguise the fact that a chunk of the land is being sold off for flats?

Shirley amazing changes changes to the stands or new stands, with the finance from 40 x £huge. Otherwise a waisted opportunity from their final ever windfall gain.

New stands, how often to they fill the ones they've got?

Think they sold out for every T20 last summer. That's not what cricket purists want to hear I know but it makes them a lot of money I guess. Also that 1 day match against the Aussies in 2017 sold out very early and could have sold a lot more tickets I think.

Without test matches, no.

That's a double-edged sword. Durham developed the ground for test matches and near-bankrupted themselves. Yorkshire very nearly went the same way. And being a test ground hasn't done Glamorgan much good either

I don’t expect Hove will ever stage them. So isn’t the financial model for most clubs is a large annual loss, in effect, met by an ECB subsidy?

200 pensioners on deck chairs watching the 4 day game, a few nights of 5,000 watching 20/20 and an Elton John gig, doesn’t meet the costs.

How long before someone buys one of the flats then moans when there's a cricket match on?
