I have very little interest in the Oscars but I've just seen that Sophie from Peep Show has won best actress which pleases me greatly.

A magnificent night. From all the gossip and finding out who everyone is wearing on the red carpet to the glitz and glamour of the awards ceremony proper. We’re all allowed to wake up bleary eyed this one Monday in the year such is the importance and magnitude we place on the Oscars as a society. I imagine the roar could be heard all the way to Los Angeles when Olivia Coleman won best actress, fantastic for her and for the country.

Hither (sometimes Thither)
A little surprised to awaken to the news that The Green Book was the BEST film of the year. Perhaps Viggo Mortensen's character, though, was a rendition of Hollywood in being archaic and racist and unpoetic, and that not all black people are bad. I wouldn't say the competition for best film was huge, although A Star is Born perhaps would have wished for more, and the anti-Netflix industry hasn't buckled by awarding the sometimes stunning Roma - i part-wished Cuaron hadn't made it with them though, to give it a full go in cinemas, but the money they offer far outweighs that which other studios do, even if work can disappear into a large small-screen trough.
Still, the Oscars and I are not usually in agreement, so on it goes.

..I think PC Doris Thatcher in "Hot Fuzz" was her defining role. Up there with "Galaxy Quest" as my favourite comedy.

Somewhere Mark and Jez are having a **** and eating those expensive German biscuits in celebration.

It's on National Geographic this Sunday night at 9pm.

Although i was disappointed to find out that El Capitan is a mountain and not a 900ft tall monument to Bruno.

I quite enjoyed Green Book, but Best Picture ?? Do behave.

We're asked to accept that within 2 months, Tony Lip went from actually binning a couple of glasses that two black workmen in his kitchen had drank from, to being closest best friends with a black guy who he'd never met before in his life.

I get the "arc" of the story behind that, but it struck me as rather clumsy, trite and wholly unlikely (I know its based on a true story, but I think some artistic licence had been taken there).

I didn't realise that the real Tony Lip became an actor and went on to play Carmine Lupertazzi in the Sopranos.

Didn't know that either, although I've never watched The Sopranos.

Interesting that Tony and Don both died in 2013 within a few months of each other.

Are you sure it isn't after all it's a 3000ft granite monolith.

Fans of this sort of this, of which I very much count myself, won't see anything new, as such.
The awkward personal scenes do give the film an extra layer, but as said Alex practicing The Boulder Problem is a truly awesome piece of cinematography.
