Looking to buy a cricket bat for my son as he's now outgrown his old one. I'm shocked to find that there's nowhere in B&H that sells one. Went to Chavs Direct and Decathlon, but nothing there. The Intersport shop in Hove doesn't sell them.

Oh, for the days when we had AA Baker, Swifts, David Rose and Wisden.

I could buy one online but there's nothing like getting a bit of wood in your hand and trying them out. Where's the fun in ordering one and hope that it feels all right when you get to try it. It's a pretty poor state of affairs when a city the size of B&H doesn't sell equipment for its national summer sport.

And relax ...

The shop at the county ground has a big selection of Newbery bats. Otherwise Intersport in Lewes or Wisdom Sports in HH are your best bet.

That's mad. Even Decathlon sell cricket bats / balls / whites etc up here. Surely there must be a specialist shop somewhere in the area? I do realise that cricket is way bigger in Yorkshire than anywhere else but still.........

Didn't you try the Newbery shop at the county ground?

Another vote for the County Ground. It's where I picked up my Newberry a few years back.

What size bat are you looking for? I have a full size Gunn & Moore looking for a new home.

I'm looking for a Harrow or Size 6.

I may be interested in a G&M though, my old bat's on its way out - what condition/price?

Leeds - but not the dirty bit

Yep, In Leeds you can't move for sports shops, large and small selling loads of cricket equipment.

For anyone in Yorkshire highly recommend Warrior Bats in Wakefield, hand made, your spec, very reasonable prices, no more than a G&M etc in a sports shop.

I looked at the Newbery in the summer, the cheapest bat was just under £200. That's a bit steep for something that he may outgrow by next season. If he was part of the county set-up, it maybe justified but he probably won't bat more than half a dozen times with it, far too much for my budget.

Bit of a way out for you no doubt but can thoroughly recommend Jim Hills (ex Billingshurst now at Coolham just off A272). An old fashioned Sports Gear Shop (well Barn these days), get all my cricket gear from there. https://www.jimhillssports.co.uk/

This thread reminds me I need a new bat as well! And some ability to wield it of course, sadly not so easy...

Wisdoms in Haywards Heath definitely the best bet if you want a selection

This. They often have a selection of "factory seconds" which they sell at a discount. There's nothing wrong with them*, they just have a few imperfections in the wood.

*Not that I was ever particularly good at using one.

Rugby League?

(Sorry - moved to Yorkshire last year, League is massive here!)

Basically I used it for a season. Great bat. It's in pretty good nick, it's just been sitting in my loft for a while. More than happy to send it to you (I live near Bristol) and then you can give it a check and see what you think. We can worry about price/postage after that.

Not in South Yorkshire it isn't. [emoji16]

Know what you mean though, I take the sprog to Yorkshire Pathways training in Wakefield on Sundays and it's full of egg chasing League fans.

Another vote for this - large range (once in the shop go upstairs) and very knowledgeable service, plus a discount if a member of any Sussex league clubs I think. They will also do the knocking in for you. Well worth a visit.

Ah - I work in Wakefield (and stayed in a hotel in Wakefield 2/3 nights a week for 8 months before moving), so that is where most of my experience comes from!

What amazes me is the sheer number of people that are active compared to the Midlands, where I had lived for 15 years before moving up here. Really keen to get my boys into some (any) sport, when they are a little older.
