Yep, I do this - shows that you still offer good manners out to someone who has missed their opportunity.
Here's one, when you fart [out loud] in a room when you're on your own, do you still say "pardon me" ?

Inlaws found burgess hill very lacking in manners and chit chat but since moving to Seaford say its like going back in time regarding manners, have found the same ourselves with people striking up conversations, having a dog helps. Is Seaford the friendliest town in Sussex?
Gets to me as well, I always say in a loud voice "Pardon?" They inevitably turnaround and say "what" or "wot" and I reply "I thought you said thank you" then flounce off myself.
Yes - I agree totally. But the most pleasing (perhaps rather childish) thing is if when is a double set of doors. They don't say thank you at the first
set - so you time it exactly so the second door slams right in their face.
Unbelievable, I was going to start a thread this morning, about greetings in the street.
Near where I live, I always say Morning, Evening or good afternoon to strangers I pass on my way.
Some look at me as if I am some sort degenerate that has no right to talk to them.
Just so rude.
They either cant speak English, or just ignore me.
Imagine how the youngsters of today will be in 30 years time.
Manners cost nothing.

Same in Spain. Thanking a waiter is really not the done thing but I still can't help myself even though I've heard it's a strange thing to do. It just feels too weird to not acknowledge that somebody has just brought you food or a drink.

I think it’s a little different in Spain and other countries where waiting on and other service industry jobs are considered legitimate “professions” and no one would ever consider not leaving some form of gratuity. However I’m the same as you and spew out copious por favors and graciases, often getting a perplexed expression and a “de-na” or “de nada” in return.
Spaniards Italians etc just don’t have that culture of pleasantries between customer and service provider that we do - but if you say please and thanks it demands that they respond, otherwise they would be being intentionally rude. Interesting...
Anything related to manners is specific to a country or region. These things just aren't universal.
I'm guessing that 'not' isn't meant to be there. The Spanish and Italian don't tip as a rule as, like you say, being a waiter is considered a profession.

I will always continue to be polite.. I was brought up believing manners maketh man. I am not going to change that, regardless..
Working in a hospitality environment myself, I normally point out that they could be more polite by the time they get to a third interaction without any courtesy. Most staff in these jobs get paid very poorly and at least deserve that.
It really winds me up on Eggheads when a player is asked to go “first or second”? And they say “I’ll go first”. As an automatic reaction I say “please”! At the telly, even if I am on my own.
It’s all age groups.
Queuing in shops, people in their 60’s upwards so often don’t say please or thank you when buying stuff, collecting prescriptions. So many ill mannered people out there.

Tips actually means ‘To Insure Prompt Service’ and when introduced it was paid on arrival, to insure that there wouldn’t be any problems during the meal.
I tip when I think that an effort has been made to make my experience smoother and more enjoyable, if it hasn’t then I don’t.
