As Albion U-23s return to Premier League 2 action this evening, it's time for another development squad player profile. This time, at the request of TSB, NSC brings you everything you wanted to know (and a whole lot more) about central defender (and occasional right-back) Ben White. White is undoubtedly one of the most promising youngsters developing through the system. His manager last season, Newport County's Mike Flynn, said:-

Definitely the best loan signing we have ever had at this football club.

and

He trains with the right attitude every day and he has got a very bright future. I don't like putting pressure on young people but I'd be surprised if he didn't go on to get a full international cap.

High praise indeed. Read more about Benjamin here -------> U-23 Player Profile - Ben White

And then, if you missed them, you can read profiles of George Cox, Ben Barclay and Owen Moore

Outstanding article - thanks.

You pose the question “is he good enough to be a PL player and, if so, with us?” (Paraphrased).

There’s a massive gap between L2 and us - even if he did win 4 season awards for Newport. He’ll need time out on loan at L1 &/or Championship level first, surely? Only then will we be able to tell. If that’s correct, then there’s an additional rider to the ones your posit: will he have the patience to stay the course with us?

Thanks as ever AZ. A question on White, with Burn arriving in January, is he likely to go out on loan then?
Without wanting to thrust more onto your lap than you have the time for, are you planning on updating the contract list any time soon?

It's the 64,000 dollar question, isn't it? Some young players go out on loan to get experience, certainly. But equally, others don't. To pick a few current examples: Wolves' Morgan Gibbs-White, who is more than 2 years younger than White, already has 27 league appearances for Wolves and he hasn't ever had a loan spell. Crystal Palace's Aaron Wan-Bissaka, seven weeks younger than White, has 19 Premier League appearances for the Eagles and has never had a loan spell. Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon is also more than two years younger than White and already has 80 league appearances for Fulham - and has never been out on loan.

One thing we know with certainty though - Chris Hughton, in his almost four years with Albion, has been unwilling to give a home-grown youngster (who wasn't an already established first-team player) a league start (and barely any substitute appearances).

I've been meaning to update it since the 25-man squads were announced in September. However, as someone has now made a specific request, I'll see if I can find time over the next week or so.

Ones for the future

The Brighton and Hove Albion Development Squad remain upbeat, inspite of limited first team opportunities.

It's amazing how three points - away from home - can lighten your mood, isn't it?

Anyway, something else to be happy about today; young Mr White travelling with the first-team squad to Huddersfield:-

People saying that getting Connolly a loan at the bottom of the Championship would be a waste, as you can't score with no chances.

However that would be the perfect opportunity for White to prove himself, no? Come in and help solidify a struggling Championship defence.

Michael Obafemi is making his 5th Premier League appearance for Southampton today, and his first start - against Manchester United. Obafemi also made his full Republic of Ireland debut 11 days ago against Denmark.

He has nothing like Connolly's scoring record at U-23 level this calendar year (and against a lower standard of opposition this season). He hasn't been out on loan.

He is 6 months younger than Connolly.

Was he does have, though, is a first-team manager willing to play him.

Almost a pity he wasn't on the bench today, what with Balogun apparantly doing his best to get a red card! Still, at least CH didn't make the mistake of switching Bernardo to RB again when Bruno got hurt.

I agree, in so much as Connolly should be getting a spot on our bench. If Locadia buggers off in January, as seems likely, it would be nice to see Chris putting trust in Gyokeres and Connolly.

However Obafemi is not really in the same position, his chance has come because Southampton are so appalling upfront, they had no other options.

Brighton & Hove Albion defender Ben White has joined Peterborough United on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old academy product will spend the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign with the Sky Bet League One side, having played against Steve Evans’s men in the Checkatrade Trophy at the ABAX Stadium back in October.

Chris Hughton said, “This move is one which allows Ben to play regular first-team football at a good level for his development. At this stage of his career it’s important that he continues to gain as much match experience as possible.

“He’s someone who we’ve had around the first-team squad for the first half of the campaign, but with competition for places increased with the return of Dan Burn from Wigan, this gives him the chance to go out and play regular football at a level higher than he experienced last season.”

White spent last season on loan to Newport County last season, making 42 league appearances and playing a key role in the Welsh side reaching the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup, where they exited the competition to Tottenham Hotspur in a replay at Wembley Stadium.

The defender has made five Premier League 2 appearances so far this campaign, claiming four assists, and was also named on the bench for last month’s 0-0 draw with Burnley in the Premier League at Turf Moor for the Seagulls
