Seems like the "big clubs" in the Championship are getting arsey at the new EFL TV deal with Sky.

The new deal is worth £595m over five seasons, a 35% increase on the previous contract.

It was unanimously agreed by the nine-member EFL Board which includes three Championship clubs: Reading, Brentford and Bristol City.

One unnamed executive of one of the "big clubs" said "The EFL has just started a war".

Any sympathy for the likes of Leeds, Villa and Derby etc from anyone?

Not really, just get promoted.

Many on here believe it's a pretty straight forward task after harvesting some Premier League cash.

they all need to get their own act in order before they start complaining about the EFL as that is why they are not at the 'big club' table.

Ricidulous amount of grizzling. The likes of Villa Derby and Dirty wanted to hold out for a better deal, unsurprisingly nobody came forward to trump that offer, so they had no choice but to accept the £595m from Sky. Obviously thats peanuts compared to the £5.1bn the Premier League rakes in, but then the Premier League has a global reach that the Championship will never, ever have, no matter how "massive" they think some of their clubs are. There simply isn't a comparable appetite for second division football either domestically or worldwide, as ITV Digital found out to their cost. With the best will in the world, who really wants to settle down to watch Derby v Preston ?

Reality check urgently needed.

Seems to me they have little, if any, bargaining power in the grand scheme of things. They're not big clubs anymore.

Whilst the likes of Villa may be the jewels in the Championship crown, they have been set with a cluster of tanzanite and diarolyte which reduces their value. Unfortunately they were the tanzanite of the Premier League which is why they find themselves in their current setting.

Funny really.

Had we not been promoted I could just imagine the whinning from some of our fans who think we should get more.

Not really - the market will dictate the value of the product. There was nothing to stop ESPN, Virgin, BT, Amazon or whoever from coming in and offering more than Sky did for the rights to the EFL. There was no other bid on the table, so £595m was enough.

Whether a larger portion of the £5.1bn the Premier League receives should be more generously spread than the current 'solidarity' payments to the EFL (just under £100m last season, plus the parachute payments) is another argument. But as it stands, Sky are the only game in town for the EFL so they'll have to lump it.

Any talks of a breakaway league to form a PL2 is fanciful nonsense IMO, unless someone can show me a broadcaster who'd be interested in paying anything north of £595m for it.

Fair point, there's plenty of humdrum looking fixtures in the PL as well. But as it currently stands, its still a top flight game as opposed to a second division one.

agreed. its the same type of debate in the prem league and explains the convos about a Euro league.
One of the legacies of evil old Richard Scudamore was that he absolutely insistent that the tv revenue of the 20 strong prem league should be equally shared in order that it remained competitive - although that frayed at the edges in the end (see: overseas tv revenue).

Would Albion have voted for it if we were in the Champ ?

Well I would under certain circumstances, but I agree with your point - which is that Chinese and American television audiences couldn't be less interested, and that's the issue. As you say, ITV Digital went bust after overpaying for lower league rights. There is simply no way anyone else is going to attempt it.

Given the size of Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday I'm surprised they have broken away from the EFL to form their own league comprising exclusively of their first teams and U23 teams, and having a 36 game season where they play each other 12 times. Based on a world wide audience of 3 billion they should be able to obtain TV revenue of at least £6 billion per round of fixtures. Thereby obtaining the wealth that they feel they are entitled to.
