Storrington Museum did a World War One exhibition last weekend, very sobering to find out 53 men and 1 woman did not return when the Village population was just over 1100 people in 1914. Some superb exhibits including a Tommies Kit laid out in his tent complete with .303 Lee Enfield and also a Trench Periscope. I spoke to one of the exhibitors who was dressed as a 1914 Royal Sussex Regiment Private (was an ex-Colour Sergeant himself).

We got talking about the service cap he had on and the steel helmets that they soon afterwards starting wearing. Apparently the use of helmets actually increased deaths through head wounds as soldiers mistakenly thought they were bullet proof whereas they were actually introduced to try and ward off shrapnel wounds.

Anyway just back from Storrington St.Marys Remembrance Day service. Standing Room only.
