Many have defended and lauded Hughton’s defensive game plan as a safety-first approach to the important job of survival in the Premier League however, this has produced several unexciting performances. While the club is not ready to financially compete with the top six, the club should be looking at benchmarks to determine whether an alternative approach might be more successful. Newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers have a similar attendance to Brighton, have more points and are projected to easily survive. Moreover, their safety-first strategy is based on an expansive, attacking and possession-based brand of football.

What can BHA learn from this approach?

We have learnt that if you

- have super rich owners
- pay premier league wages in the championship
- spend £100m on transfer fees in the summer
- financially invest and tied to one of the top agencies in world football

You rather unsurprisingly have a pretty competitive team at this level

It's still too early in the season to judge them. Last season Huddersfield started really well and then dropped off as team worked them out. Wolves have looked good going forward but vulnerable at the back. Once teams find a way to snuff out their attacking threat, then it be interesting to see how they get on.

After 9 posts in 18 months, I guess your next post will be near the end of the season so please feel free to bounce then and see how they have got on.

I don’t think wolves look vulnerable at the back at all, I also don’t think they look that good going forward. They are kind of the reverse Fulham, they look solid at the back but haven’t scored that many goals. Fulham on the other hand look like they will score a lot of goals but go down because of their shocking defence.

I’m not sure, but give Tony Bloom a bell and let him know your thoughts. Now I’ve got his number here somewhere . . . .

Past performance is no guide to future performance however..

Historically we seem to have been doing most of the teaching.

I think it makes rather more sense to compare us to Cardiff, as the last two teams to get promoted from second in the championship. We should use their results as a benchmark to see if our approach is successful
