Leicestershire Police employees offered training in 'banter' to avoid making inappropriate comments

'We have a hugely diverse workforce where people have differing opinions'

Leicestershire Police has paid out hundreds of pounds to give its employees 'banter training'.

The force has brought in an external company to help employees understand what is acceptable, and what is not, in comments made both in person and online.

Although the training is voluntary, the force said it was vital after employees questioned what was appropriate.

External company Inclusive Employers delivers the training. It was paid £462.50 for a half-day workshop.

It offers a workshop called 'Banter - balancing wit and wisdom', which aims to guide delegates "along the fine line between fun, stress reducing, morale raising workplace communication and a harmful, debilitating and persistent verbal barrage".
Lynne Woodward, of Leicestershire Police's diversity and inclusion unit, said: “The force places a great deal of emphasis on upholding professional standards and the code of ethics in the workplace.

“We celebrate the fact we have a hugely diverse workforce where people have differing opinions and views and this is something that everyone needs to be mindful of.

“This voluntary session aims to provide our officers and staff the opportunity to have a practical discussion about how comments made, either in conversation or online, can be interpreted by others."

“We recognise the workplace should be a sociable environment and this training is not about constraining and restricting conversations among colleagues,” added Ms Woodward.

problem is that some people look for offence in anything, and if your mindset is like that you'll find it (NSC anyone?). No win situation, especially for services like the Police.

Wow. Way to undermine me. You take pride in SHAMING me on a message board?

Typical bloke.

Banter will probably go a bit like this around Croydon:

Croydon copper to local hoody: " Evening sonny, what are you doing hanging around this toilet?"

Local hoody: "what do you mean toilet" (in a high pitched voice)

Copper: "You know well enough what I mean, Smelhurst" (snigger snigger)

Local hoody: "Oi, that toilet you're referring to, is home to Mr Tumble"

Copper: "On your way sonny, as you're ultra close to being arrested for making me laugh":
