After our World Cup exploits, England have moved up to the giddy heights of 6th in the FIFA World rankings.

Before anyone poo-poos that, yes I know FIFA rankings are not exactly the most accurate reflection of football prowess, but hey, still nice to see.

England up to 6th

South Africa still 74th then.

You were expecting it to change? This update only really reflects the outcome of the World Cup (where SA didn't play), and is still a long way from correcting from the old ranking system to the new ELO system.

Already been well explained in another thread (about Percy Tau) how and when South Africa would have the opportunity to climb into the top 50.

So how do Uruguay go up +9 to 5th and we go up +6 to 6th?

Isn't there some weird algorithm to do with the ranking of the teams beaten? Uruguay beat Portugal in the WC who were ranked 4th at the time. The highest ranked side we beat was Sweden who were 11th at the time.

As good as any explanation.

More importantly, will this improve our status for the European qualification draw?
