Well that lacked substance.
Why?... I thought the Labour ex MP caught the essence of what Trumpism is to his voting public... he spoke to ordinary folk, didn't deliberately seek out oddballs and extremists.... a fair set of exchanges, look forward to the next episode.

Balls showed why he didn't become labour leader. He's nice, credulous and normal. Its one thing having a vision for your country. But you need to have a vision how to win too.

Here's a rare NSC moment I take back my comment , sort of.

When watching it I wanted him to be more confrontational. For example the Mexican illegal immigrant who didn't want Mexican illegal immigrants.
On reflection I realise that wasn't the point. He was gathering their stories and doing so in an entertaining, engaging manner. 'Insubstantial' is clearly the wrong criticism as there was plenty to consider.
I shall rewatch it today and am recording the remaining 2 episodes.
Next week it includes interviews with victims of school shootings.
Well worth a watch.

I hoped that this programme would be interesting and since Balls stepped away from the Commons, he seems to have become a less childish personality.

But it was as dull as dishwater. He was trying to be Louis Theroux, who's done exactly this type of programme brilliantly, but failed miserably. A lack of personality and he lacked bite to politely challenge the views he heard.

There weren't any extreme views to challenge, exactly what it said on the tin.

He didn't enter the fray assuming that every Trump supporter was a gun toting racist.... at least in this episode, he highlighted very well that there were plenty of normal voters who thought that Trumpism resonates with their ideas of what the US should or could be, simple.

Theroux makes a career of talking to the fringes of society.. those right out there, this program was not about the fringes, it was about the majority who mostly occupy the Republican middle ground.

You're reading too much into my post.

I don't think he met extremists and I think Trump will win the next election with relative ease, for various reasons. Without you telling me, I get why half of American voters like his message and actions.

Balls being a 'socialist' and internationalist, I thought he might have, as I said gently, challenge some thinking e.g. on immigrants. He seemed to only do this when talking afterwards to the camera on his own.

I watched about 10 minutes of it – with the monster trucks – and got bored. Didn't really care for his presenting style and it wasn't really anything we haven't seen/heard before. We KNOW there are 'normal' people who love him and what he stands for – this fashion for painting the world as people fitting into one of the two extremes (coming from someone who doesn't subscribe to either of the fars) is pretty tedious, as is the growing list of colloquialisms.
