1999 Paul Lawrie beat Frenchman Jean Van der Velde in one of the most bizarre final days (holes in fact) ever.

2018 Alexander Levy is the only French competitor in the Open Golf.

2018 France win the World Cup (Soccerball not golf).

Betfair have Monsieur Levy at 550-1 winner and 30-1 top 10 finish.

Coincidence enough for me to back the chap e/w.

Fair enough. Anyway, the Open Championship thread is always one of my favourites of the year. Can't wait for Thursday morning.

The Sunday Times had an interesting article about Van der Velde this week, with an interview with his (ex) missus Brigitte, who at the time back then was also his coach. She was horrified when he took out his driver on that par 5 18th with a 3 shot lead, and wanted to tell him to take an iron, but rules forbid coaching during the round so she had to keep schtum. He could've trundled to a par or bogey (or double bogey) and lifted the Claret Jug, but we all saw what happened. That was in 1999.

By 2002 they were divorced. Was never going to end well that, was it.
