For music play back, Sonos. Sonos are still doing a pair of the Alexa enabled Play:1 for £349

I have a pair of play 1s in my lounge, really pleased with them.
I reckon an echo would probably do the job in a bedroom or a small kitchen, and they are less than half the price of Sonos.
They integrate quite well so you can mix it up.
