Please take 2 minutes of your time to sign this petition. Brighton fans have had to put up with no support from the EFL when they lost their ground and had to play at the Withdean. We need all football supporters to sign and ensure the EFL cannot allow owners such as the Oyston's to ruin our great football clubs

Click this link to sign the petition "The Government must introduce an independent regulator for English football"

No, it's the Football League.

We have had this on before but there may be others who haven't signed yet.

Technically the FA are the overiding authority as they have to approve and sanction every league played in England from local pub leagues to The Premier but they are run as independent entities under this umbrella and the FA rarely got involved unless there is an obvious breach of the rules deposited with the FA when the League is sanctioned. An example of this was Steve Foster banned under FL rules from the 1983 Cup Final as his legal team argued that it was a cup game and not subject FL Rules and applied to the FA to have this set aside but the FA disagreed and refused his request. He was banned under the topping up process.

The Football League are the ones who do the Fit and Proper test on club owners in the FL. They are useless at it.

i meant that the FA is an independent regulator for football. the problem is that a regulator isnt whats required or being asked for, we have decent-ish governance. the problem is the regulations aren't there to deal with some problems, in partcular when a clubs owners act against the interest of fans rather than themself/shareholders. what actually being asked for is special rules, maybe a special form of business structure (like a charity, or a partnership) for clubs to be owned and operated as. trouble is even if such a structure existed, it would probably not be in the interests of owners to change to that structure, so you'd need governement to legislate to force it.

Hence the petition to the government.

it misses the the point, as we have an independent regulator. if we want legislation ask for that. currently clubs run as Limited companies and fit within the constraints of company law. if a owner as major shareholder wants to take money out, thats their prerogative. unfortunatly fans dont own the clubs and so have little input as things stand. a regulator cant change that, it need new law.
