Does anyone know what's going on with this site? It secured planning permission December 2016 but has sat dormant ever since.

???

Bloody eyesore. Owners of properties like that should be forced to develop it or sell it immediately to someone who will. Apparently Brighton has a housing shortage and yet buildings like that sit vacant for years. Shocking.

The same lot are developing the American Express site. In light of the PM's speech today you do wonder about sites like this.

It has a housing shortage to the tune of about 21,000 dwellings. The owners of Anston House have sat on this property for years waiting for the right offer to come along. My ex was interested in having her school on this site a fair while ago. The response was as ugly as the building itself.

The plans were for three towers on the site, all seven storeys taller than the existing block, which will cast a huge shadow over large areas of Preston Park. There were hundreds of objections and the planning committee agreed that the plans failed to provide anywhere near the amount of affordable housing required. But somehow they passed the plans anyway, with the infamous Julie Cattell, chair of the committee, voting in favour despite the fact that she is a councillor for Preston Park ward. Nothing suspicious about that decision at all, I'm sure....

Think of all those B&H born and bred kids who could have had reasonably priced starter homes there instead of having to live with their parents for the foreseeable future. Shameful waste of a major vacant property.

Not looking to make this political but the PM today has made a speech putting the blame on to LGAs but this site has been signed off. How can they be forced to build? How long will the American Express site sit empty?

It's the B&H way. Major buildings close down and just sit boarded up and crumbling for decades before they're too late to save (or fall into the sea - with an assist by a 'mystery fire').

LGAs were largely stopped from building new housing stock under Thatcher. The emphasis went on to Housing Associations. To blame them is to blame her.

But the plans allow for very few affordable dwellings there, as the planning committee admitted before passing them anyway. It'll just mean more Londoners.

Sad but true. Though how difficult would it be to transform the presumably structurally sound Anston House into 100% affordable housing, ring-fenced for local kids from the clutches of incoming Londoners or the Buy-To-Let Portfolio brigade? I just feel sad for those super sparky Varndean kids I see every day who don't have a care in the world but who don't have a chance of owning their own home either.

What is it, 8 minutes walk to the station from there though New England Street. You're probably right, quicker for central London than most of affordable London.
