I've been looking at a holiday cottage in Cornwall through Airbnb. It's a little cheaper than if booked through TripAdvisor. The cottage is a dedicated holiday home so doesn't involve the owner vacating it.

Is it 'safe' to book a week through this company? The internet is full of problems people have with last minute cancellation from the host, but i wonder if that's the case in a situation like this.

Any opinions or experiences gratefully received!

I've stayed in air bnb's probably thirty times and it's great, you can get some amazing places so much more interesting than a hotel for great prices. Yes you hear a few scare stories, but a fraction of the millions of rooms they sell a year.

Watch out for the air BnB fees, and cleaning charges etc when you go to check out as they can often make the price quite a bit more than the nightly fee first quoted.

I've only every had one problematic stay in Japan where the room wasn't what we thought and communication was tough but we got a refund without much difficulty, plus the circumstances shouldn't apply to your stay.

Also if you get a referral before you join, you'll probably be able to get a discount on your first stay. I can invite you if PM me (disclaimer - I'll also get money off a stay too for doing so!)

I think Tripadvisor cover you if booked through the site so should be ok.
Always be wary of people asking you to pay "outside" the site by direct bank transfer (a bit dodgy, can be ok but you aren't covered) or Western Union (almost certainly fraudsters, WU is the method most beloved of the Lads from Lagos who will scam the tits of their own grannies)

Here you go, sign up through this link, you'll get 25 off, I'll get 15. Only if you haven't already registered, and won't be offended if you'd rather not accept a link from a stranger! It's obviously legit though.

Sign up for Airbnb and get £25 off your first adventure. Here’s my invitation link: https://abnb.me/e/L7zWYBhXfK

Man, I'm sorry I've already signed up. Otherwise I'd go for it.

I have used them many times with no problems whatsoever for properties in Rome, Florence, Venice, London, Salzburg and Thailand. It's the only place I use for holiday properties as the choice of properties is excellent.
I always message the owner with questions and as others have said, as long as you pay through the website rather than direct to the owner you will be fine.

We used to use Airbnb but found a site called Snaptrip that has loads of professional cottage companies in one place. They specialise in last minute which is perfect as we always seem to leave it late. Airbnb was better pre-kids when we felt happier with things being more of an adventure (less well organised!)

My mate sells various flats through airbnb and has never had one problem,he doesnt have a problem either with business rates or the cost of being compliant with health and safety regulations, fire regulations or risk assessments like Hotels and bed and breakfasts do either.
Welcome to the progressive gig economy.

Some good points there.

Stayed in about 20-25 around Asia and never had an issue with it. Nothing but good things to say. Whether the UK is as reliable as 'developing countries' though I don't know. Some very unreliable people out there at times but just report them if so and sure you'd get your money back (not that it helps save your holiday but sure you'd be able to find an alternative if the worst happened. If going that route of pessimism though I'm sure it could happen with any other site or company just as easily).

Some good points there.

Not to mention the girls he gets to clean the flats after occupancy have zero hours contracts and diminished workers rights compared to housekeepers employed in the hospitality industry.

Im not against someone letting their flat out for financial gain, but it is being extended and abused by some to the detriment of others......there is little regulation and while some applaud it as wonderful new unregulated gig world economy where cheap is best.........it rather sucks to those who actually just feed the business but dont participate in ownership or belonging to a company and the benefits that go with it
