This tie features the most placid of wild cards, bringing the Basset Hound to the party. They laughed when it was nominated, they shrugged when it was seconded and finally they tutted as it saw off the Jewel Wasp on its way to the knockout stages. Its progress has not been without controversy and VAR was used once the polls closed. The Basset Hound was shown a yellow card and has been reminded of its obligations as a WHC entrant. Competitors may not proceed in the competition without a compelling justification of hardness being offered. Thus far the Hound has trotted around the ring waiting for its opponents to simply run out of puff. This will not be permitted in the knockout rounds and the Basset Hound faces possible disqualification if it fails to offer an actual fight.

The Tasmanian Devil has quietly been going about its business. It coasted through the group stage, coming in behind the Great White and holding off the challenge of the Bobbit Worm along the way. The antipodean tearaway will fancy its chances going into this match.

WHC has always loved a carnivore. It may only be the size of a small dog but the Tasmanian Devil has sufficient "hard" pedigree to take its name from, er... the Devil. It is less of a hunter than might be imagined but will eat almost anything it can find and can polish off an entire carcass, leaving nothing at all behind. It achieves this with its strong bite force: the strongest bite relative to body size of any living mammalian carnivore. It eats fiercely, mates fiercely and even its offspring will end up fighting simply for their place at the teat. Fighting is just part of the Tasmanian Devil's day job.

Basset Hound - 4th place in Group D with 13 votes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basset_Hound

It's got to be the Hound. Don't be fooled by it's lovable character, behind that cute look is a creature of hardness. It doesn't have to look hard because .... well .... er .... it's THAT hard ! One zap with those puppy dog eyes and it has you under full control - feeding it, tickling it, taking it for 'walkies'. It's that hard it controls humans and humans don't even know it. One lick from it's tongue and it has you in fits of giggles ready for it's main attack. All the other competitors look hard and vicious because they NEED to so people THINK they're hard - not the Basset Hound. Instead it hides behind it's lovable looks just waiting, patiently waiting, and then BOOM !!!

POLL CLOSED - TASMANIAN DEVIL 38 BASSET HOUND 12

Never in doubt!

Taz.jpg

Taz relaxes after an absolute procession: one of the most one sided knockout rounds this commentator can remember. The Tasmanian Devil was always playing well within himself and will be delighted at having made the final eight while being able to take things so easy. Far greater challenges lie ahead but for now Taz can sit back and watch the remaining competitors slug it out. As for the Basset Hound, it all seemed like a good idea at the time but there will be those that argue WHC has been devalued by its presence. Even the Hound seems to hang his head in shame...
