A favour please. We took a young lad aged 9 and his Dad who escaped the war in Syria to the Bournemouth game yesterday, their first big football match ever. The boy is football crazy and although he started the day saying Man Utd was his favourite team I'm pretty sure we converted him by the end.

He wants to play the game at a club but not start off that seriously, just train and see how he gets on. He's a very bright and friendly lad but understandably nervous and we think easing in gently would suit better than having to have a playing trial and play league every week.

Are there any teams or clubs that would offer this to a kid of that age based near Central or East Brighton? They live in Queens Park and probably wouldn't want to start off travelling too far. My son's club is in Southwick and we accommodate exactly this sort of player but, as a location guide, they'd prefer nearer their home. Doesn't have to be a league team at all - just a regular meet up to play and socialise.

I know the local teams fairly well and I'm pretty sure at my son's age many are oversubscribed and you have to try out. I'm just not sure if that's the case at under 9s or if there's something more akin to an after school or weekend club going on.

Any help greatly received

Not exactly helpful for this situation but West Hove Dynamos do a Saturday morning drop in session in Wish Park which sounds ideal apart from the location. If the players are any good they get asked to train with the teams and then get to join the team proper.

Must have been a great experience for the lad. If he is in school year 3 I know there’s a football fun club at Rottingdean Football club on Saturday morning up to that age.

Sadly, I can't help at all but got to say I agree with the other posts about this being a fantastic gesture on your part. Not least rescuing a local lad from supporting Man U.

Thanks everyone. Patcham sounds promising and Rottingdean & West Hove both on bus routes.

One of my poker buddies who has a quarter share in the seat next to me knows them. We had a spare ticket and the lad definitely needed rescuing from Man U!

The guys who run the Chip Basket in Portland Rd are Syrian and big football fans and they may know of somewhere

I doubt whether he will be able to play with a team here in the Queens Park area. We have no pitches !

A team that plays at East Brighton Park, Woodingdean or Rottingdean would likely be the nearest. Also the pitches up near the Dials.

East Brighton Park teams are probably the best option (if they have the pitches these days).

Good luck. Great to hear of your support.

Just far enough away from LDC
Do you know if he is school year 4 or 5? I take a u9 team at saltdean which has 8 and 9 yr olds in it (school yr 4) so happy to help if he cant find a team nearer

Woodingdean Youth are a decent enough club these days and not far from Queens Park.

 I'll suggest that. I know they're a decent club, played their under 10s last season, good close game and their coach was a really nice guy. Can't believe I didn't think of them!

My lad plays for Hove Park Colts U7's and they have a number of teams. Could drop them an email

Again worth a suggestion. Do you train at Hove Park? When we've played HPC it used to be at Hove Park but has been at council pitches in the older groups.

Do you know if he is school year 4 or 5? I take a u9 team at saltdean which has 8 and 9 yr olds in it (school yr 4) so happy to help if he cant find a team nearer

I'll find out - again cheers (suspect it's year 4 but I'll double check).

Darlington Quakers of National League North could use some help in staying out of the relegation zone.

In the west you have Mile Oak Wanderers, Hangleton Rangers, Hove Rivervale, Fishersgate, West Hove Dynamos & Hove Park Colts. All decent well run clubs. But vary greatly on price. In central Brighton you have Patcham, Withdean, Hollingbury Hawks and Woodingdean and then more to the east you have Rottingdean, Saltdean, Peacehaven.

Having run a youth football club, I would say don't take anyone's advice, but go along to four or five of these clubs and see which one the lad enjoys the most. Each club has it good coaches and not so good coaches and it also depends on what he and you want...Whether that is just going along to have some fun or maybe, something a little more competitive.

From my experience some clubs, and I won't name names, concentrate too much on competitiveness at an early age, which then often changes when the players grow and start to develop technically and emotionally.

As well as running a club in the past, I've also coached boys and girls teams over the last 10 years and what club may suit one child may not suit another.

So look at the cost over the season, what else the club offers but most importantly of all, whether their coaches are all qualified, CRC checked and if possible, Charter Standard.

If you need any further advice then drop me a message.

Things have changed a bit from a few years back. I remember my son wanting to join a club and for two years, we tried most of those, they were all completely full (even the waiting lists were full), so he gave up looking. Maybe his year was particularly full or maybe fewer kids want to play sport these days - things certainly look promising for this Syrian lad.

Hope he finds the right team
