Under PL rules we must name a 25 man squad of which 8 are Home Grown Players.
Here is our squad-
*=Home grown
Baldock, Samuel*
Bong, Thomas Gaetan
Duffy, Shane Patrick Michael*
Dunk, Lewis Carl*
Goldson, Connor*
Gross, Pascal
Hemed, Tomer
Hunemeier, Uwe
Izquierdo Mena, Jose Heriberto
Kayal, Beram
Knockaert, Anthony Patrick
Krul, Timothy Michael*
Maenpaa, Niki Emil Antonio
March, Soloman Benjamin*
Murphy, James
Murray, Glenn
Propper, David Petrus Wenceslaus Henri
Rosenior, Liam James*
Ryan, Matthew David
Saltor Grau, Bruno
Schelotto, Ezequiel Matias
Sidwell, Steven James*
Skalak, Jiri
Stephens, Dale Christopher*
Suttner, Markus

We have 9 HGP so have leeway to lose one for a foreigner. Who is out then?
Why is Murray not a HGP?

Sidwell is possibly most at risk of loosing his place from the HGP's, but all 9 look pretty safe. This may become a factor in the future as to who gets a new offer for next season

Murray was playing in the USA for the relevant years for HGP status.

Hopefully not Dunk going !

The opposite reason to Murray. Was in England for the relevant HGP years.

Same reason as Shane Duffy.

When you consider HGP and our out of contract squad for June 2018. Could we offer Krul a contract over Maenpaa as the third choice keeper, Will Rosenior be retained over Bruno or Bong as we look to improve in our fullback positions. Could Lualua or Ince find themselves named in the 25 man squad next season in place of other fringe players who haven't been used in many matchday squads

Might explain any interest in Dembele.

U21 this year, HGP in the future.

Fully expect Walton to be our back-up keeper next season, and he'll count as another that's HGP. Things would need to go drastically wrong for any of Ince, LuaLua or Rosenoir to be in or amongst match day squads, fully expect the former two to be heading for the exit door permanently before the start of next season (though could see Rosenoir doing some coaching work with our younger players going forward).

I suspect that of our HGPs in the 25 man squad, Rosenior and Sidwell will go in the summer.

LuaLua and Ince also seem unlikely to get new contracts for next season ???

The problem with that is you are potentially limiting him to a handful of competitive appearances all season (two, in the worst case scenario, in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, which could well be against lower league opposition). Surely you want him to be playing regularly and developing further?

It's a quandary that doesn't have an obvious solution.

Can anyone explain what qualifies a player as 'home grown'? Cheers

From the Premier League September 2017 squad list bulletin:-

An HGP means a player who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

Glenn Murray doesn't qualify because he spent three years* out in the States playing for Wilmington Hammerheads.

Jamie Murphy doesn't qualify because he came up with a Scottish club.

Tim Krul and Shane Duffy qualify because, irrespective of their nationality, they DID come up through the youth systems of English clubs.
