I know Bono can be an opinionated tw@t, but I had almost forgotten how good a band U2 are, great show!

Anyone else watching this?
Early stuff was great. Just a shame about Bono being such a complete knob.

Thought Cat Deeley's pitiful fawning over the band - and trying to get Larry to speak - AND the obligatory plug for the sub-standard new material - rendered the show unwatchable. In fact switched to Rick Stein's Mexican claptrap one Freeview channel up earlydoors. Shame. Superb band with a superb back catalogue. Something billed as 'U2 At The BBC' deserved far far better.

Agree with some of what you say, in particular Ms Deeleys interview style - however, how do you know the show was rubbish if you turned over "early doors".

Who saw them at Jenkinson's in 1981? Support was the Comsat Angels as I recall. Saw the reunion gig in Sheffield a few years back (Comsats I mean). As Mark Kermode has said on several occasions, the Comsats were the better band.

Definitely saw them at the Top Rank - can't remember if it was 81 or 82.
Also saw them at Hammersmith Palais supported by The Alarm - pretty sure that was 82.
Great live band.
Also saw 'em at Sheffield Arena on the Zooropa tour (maybe 95?) - excellent, and more recently at Wembley at the 360 tour (up in the gods, not so great).

Great band live.

Surprised Bono was performing given how far he is up his own backside.

Was it Family Guy who depicted him as giant turd?

December 1982. http://www.u2gigs.com/show997.html

The Alarm also supported them 2 nights running at the Lyceum Ballroom a year earlier in December 1981 (coincidentally, the first night was 36 years ago today...). I was at both of those.

First time I saw U2 was also at the Hammersmith Palais, in December 1980. That time they weren't supported by anyone - they were supporting Talking Heads.

Well, I gave it a pretty go, watched up to and including the second sit down bit of interview, the bit about borrowing each other's clothes on tour or somesuch. Then just couldn't take it any more. My bad.

First time I saw U2 was at the old Marquee Club in Wardour Street. They can't have been long off the boat, maybe 'Boy' hadn't even been released, but they were massive NME darlings already. Went with me bruv, who taped the whole show on a mini cassette recorder, as was our practice at the time. No sooner had we left the building than he promptly got mugged for aforementioned mini cassette recorder. Sake!
