Below are the opening lines to ten songs which were UK No.1 singles in each of the years of the 1970s (i.e. first lyric - 1970, second one - 1971, third one - 1972 and so on). Identify the songs and the artist(s) - no cheating...

1. Now if there's a smile on my face, it's only there trying to fool the public

2. I am the magnificent. I'm backed by the shack of a soul boss

3. Came up to you one night noticed the look in your eye, I saw you was on your own, and it was alright, yeh it was alright

4. Look out! look out! your Momma will shout. You might as well go home

5. You sheltered me from harm. Kept me warm, kept me warm

6. You've done it all, you've broken every code. And pulled the rebel to the floor

7. Well you can hear the country song from far,And someone plays the honky tonk guitar

8. Tired of drifting, searching, shifting. From town to town

9. I was walkin' down the street. Concentratin' on truckin' right

10. I heard you on the wireless back in 52. Lying awake intent at tuning in on you

I'd never have got 7 - I don't recall that at all

EDIT. I am able to spell Wizzard and Ken Boothe though, I deserve a bonus point for that :)

Well now we have all the answers perhaps time to post some 1970's tunes we like?

Mr Gallagher to kick off with, this is wonderful as is the entire album.
Blimey! Is this oldies week on NSC? We've just had a thread on 1970s west coast, now 1970s British rock!

PS. I saw Rory Gallagher perform Walk on Hot Coals in Edinburgh around that time - bloody brilliant it was!

Missed out on 3 & 8
Slade shows my age as it is still in its original white cover with my writing on as I was only 16. Sad thing is I've just lent over and touched it from the 1000's of singles in the racks.
