He probably realised that B (W)ales exceeded all expectation so he had to move on as he wouldnt do it again for the next Euros. It was a chance to get a job on the back of that success

If exceeding expectations to that level secures him the Sunderland job, then I'll hate to think what kind of opportunities would have been available if he had done a bad job.
