Following on from the Wayne Rooney thread, Beckham has always seemed to split opinion so ?

(For me, not the most naturally gifted player, but always got the absolute maximum from his abilities - Legend)

Legend is a tad strong.

Excellent player with attitude to match.

You're right of course, but I'm with W.C. Closer to legend than one trick pony, but he's no Moore or Hurst.

Voted legend as more than a one trick pony and was proud to play for his country.

Yeah, there was the marketing stuff off the pitch, but he definitely made the most of his ability. Compare his achievements to Gascogne who had much more natural ability - now he should have been a legend.

Made the most of his ability, always proud to represent his country. Was a key ambassador for the London 2012 bid team. Apart from one incident with the press he seems like a decent bloke and is a good role model.

A talented footballer who gave it his all for England (especially as captain)- what we'd give for someone like him now

Comes across well- a pretty humble bloke who doesn't take himself too seriously. I imagine his wife was behind much of his media stuff- get the impression he was much happier just playing football

265 games for Man U, 116 for Real and 115 for England- not bad

Not even close to a Messi or Ronaldo for ability he didn't have pace he couldn't beat a player but could deliver a football with pinpoint accuracy. He established himself as a key part of the most successful side of the premier league era.

Sir Alex Ferguson knew exactly what Beckham was capable of and used him superbly. However I never understood why he played in midfield as a fullback with his delivery would be up there with the best.

Just stick the youtube video on of all his career free kick goals. It's obscene

People forget just how GENUINELY good Beckham was, he remains the best English footballer technically that I've ever seen. Gerrard and Lampard were special but Beckham technically was in a world of his own in that team. His free kick prowess is incredible and people don't appreciate that.

I remember his story from when he was on loan at Preston when he said he was practicing his free kicks after training and the other players asked why he was still there, they're all going home and there he is hitting his free kicks. Who won overall?!

I went to the World Cup knockout game in Germany against Ecuador. He seemed to play as a decoy winger just standing on the sideline barely touching the ball. Then halfway through the second half he curled a free kick into the top quarter for the winner. Won the game singlehandedly. Like a specialist kicker in the NFL.

England v Greece, October 2001.

Beckham single handedly beat 11 Greeks while being hindered by 10 Englishmen.

Not exactly 'one trick pony' material.

Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore.....players who could perform to their high standards in the later stages of World Cups against other world class players and teams, and not get sent off

That red card is part of his legend.

More to the point, I think we are allowed to have legends from our generation, not just from a world cup winning team fifty years ago.

Great attitude and made the very best of his talents. Victoria comes from near where I live and I know many people that have had encounters with the Beckhams. None of those people has ever had a bad word to say about him (or her); he seems like a genuinely nice bloke.
