Newcastle United 'abused tax system', HMRC alleges

Newcastle United "systematically abused" the tax system to "secretly" make payments to agents and players during transfers, a court has heard.

The allegations emerged after the Tyneside club challenged*a raid by HM Revenue and Customs in April.

United argued no reasonable grounds existed for believing it had engaged in tax fraud, but High Court judges ruled the warrants were "lawfully issued".

The club said it was "disappointed" and "considering its options".

St James' Park and West Ham's London Stadium were raided as part of a £5m fraud investigation.

Business and financial records were seized, along with computers and mobile phones, and Newcastle's managing director Lee Charnley was among several men arrested and later released without charge.

The club challenged the legality of the search-and-seize orders obtained by HMRC, and a hearing has been held at Leeds Crown Court.

'Secret' payments

HMRC argued that reasonable grounds existed for believing Newcastle United was ''knowingly involved'' in a multimillion-pound tax fraud, and the club's application for judicial view was dismissed."

Point deduction coming?

But Mike Ashley's such a nice guy! I refuse to believe it.

This is a case brought by Newcastle, right, saying they were searched unlawfully?

Yes, they tried to say the search was illegal, but the High Court has ruled the search warrants were legal

Has anything come from the investigation, or has it all been dropped?

Nobody has been charged, although questioned, so it seems investigations are still ongoing.

Seems from the full report that HMRC are still investigating.

Don't know for sure but why would NUFC want to have a search deemed unlawful, and therefore presumably any evidence found in such search as inadmissible, unless they had something to hide!

NU and their lawyers were trying to permanently halt the entire investigation by, as we now know, wrongly claiming HMRC has broken the law in its search. To get off the hook. It failed. Any court case is a long way off. HMRC have to trawl through countless documents and computer records, interview and then present a solid case which the CPS accepts.

If Newcastle and West Ham could get point deductions along with palarse being so dreadful, staying up would be looking very likely. That would be a dream 3 to go down too.

HMRC do their own prosecutions, so the CPS isn't involved.
