I'm afraid it will be totally lost on recent generations brought up on political correctness. The series was actually a parody on the establishment and the tories, but was misread by most of its viewers, very funny for its time.
True. Garnett was supposed to be laughed at as a bigoted dinosaur. Unfortunately lots of people didn't get the joke....
