Wells is the second leading run scorer in the whole of the county championship. A good start to next season and he should really get in the England set up

Second only to Kumar Sangakara as well? So the highest Englishman! He is never on any potential discussions on Sky Sports absolute selection etc.

Over 100 first class games and averages 38 as an opener. Surely he should be getting a mention?

I think this is the second or third time he has scored over 1000 CC runs in a season too.

He's playing Div 2... that's why he's not considered.

Laurie Evans averages 5.

Five.

That is all I have to say on this matter

I'm trying to think if Sussex have ever had a worse specialist batsman. I'm sure they've had in the past when someone who just went to the right school would go out to have a bash, but in the professional era? Hard to think of anyone ... and I remember Jerry Groome and the Hoadley brothers. Evans makes them look like Bradman.

Rawlins is going to be a really good player. We've unearthed two gems in him and Archer

That is a very good question. I did a rather random trawl of my Wisden collection and the 1974 Championship averages reveal one JJ Groome averaging 11.81 over 8 games but one place higher than Johnny Barclay (who definitely did go to the right school) who weighed in with a mighty 11.57 over 10 games. Anoraks will know that Barclay (who by all accounts was a lovely bloke) also bowled some flighted off-spin filth and took 5 wickets averaging 46.20.
Nicky Wisdom (son of Norman) seemed to play a few odd games and usually scored around 2. Ah - the golden years!

John Barclay, who most definitely is a lovely bloke, played nearly 300 times for Sussex and averaged about 25 - not too shabby, particularly when he was opening batsman against fearsome pace bowlers. Marshall, Roberts, Garner, Holding, Croft, Hadlee, Procter, Daniel and Rice all played regular county cricket in that era - I don't think too many openers averaged more than 30.

Groome never really looked like a batsman and I saw his highest score. He wasn't convincing during that, either

Did JB open the batting? My recollection is that he usually came in a bit lower down the order? But maybe this was in his early years. I met him very briefly and he was, indeed, a charming guy. I think - in short - your point about Evans was valid and that further trawls through 'low scoring Sussex batsmen in the professional era' might reveal a few - but they were discarded very quickly and after only a few games. So, yes, let us award that rather unlovely accolade to Mr Evans.

Yes - there were some tasty quicks around in those days. I once saw our own John Snow smeared all round Hove by Barry Richards and thought it was this a placid pitch. And then Andy Roberts came on to bowl..................
