It's hard to comprehend how 18/19 year olds back then (or indeed, any age) could fly into battle - bravery beyond belief.
It came as a total shock when I first read about how long the spitfires could fire their guns/cannons for before having to land and re-load. Depending on the Mark, it was between 15 and 24 seconds.
