Rather see track and signalling along with station upgrades first, plus re-opening of former lines.

On the Border
Typical of Britain, we ran steam engines far longer than the rest of western Europe, so fell behind on train speeds then. We are far behind the rest of the world on high speed trains, and now we are looking to continue to run hybrid diesel and overhead electric trains rather than bite the bullet and move to full electric which has been proposed for decades.

As usual the railways are being underfunded by Government, and DfT continue to see trains as something they'd rather not get too closely involved with.

At least we don't have those horrible buses on wheels (and I don't mean trams) which run on many Northern lines
