Swindon, but used to be Manila
Right here we go.......My my ext HDD a Western Digital 500 gb ( probably about 7- 8 years old)
Has works perfectly well until today, not the laptop is telling me that it needs reformatting.
Have tried different cables, different laptop,
Diskmgmt and that telling me its incorrectly partitioned.

Obviously I dont want to reformat it as it has years of photos on..

Any ideas on how to give it the kiss of life?

Personally I think its f@*ked........very unhappy.

Tried Recuva but it wont recognise the device.

Sorry Andy, I had one of them from John Lewis, about 7 years ago, the bloody thing started making strange clicking sounds.
Basically it was, as you say f@*ked.
Luckily I had done a back up, week previous.

Download "Recover My Files" from torrent site, format the HD and recover files with "formatted hard drive" option. Job done

What you need to do is to bypass Windows by booting from a rescue cd like Hirens or System Rescue CD and there are plenty of others. Using Hirens will give an option for PartedMagic which will have the tools to recover a disk. Now if the disk is knackered it may well be the circuit board is at fault in which case buy the same make/model off ebay and swap out the circuit board. I've done quite a few of these in my time .. even from a formatted disk.
Give me more detail about the disk .. like the model.. eg WD Passport .

Try connecting it to a Mac or Linux PC and see what it can see. Others the advice above about using a boot cd to start up your workstation and see if you can recover the data is what you need. Data recovery companies charge a fortune.
