Watching it head out of Rosyth on the ITN FB feed. I think its a magnificant ship but not sure that a strategic strike carrier is whats needed in this day and age.

Well, not one without any planes anyway...

I think the planes are American, and we have pilots training on them.. but just seems a bit over the top for todays warfare, when cruise missiles and the like can pretty much do the same job

A Carrier Strike group gives the UK the ability to project significant soft and hard power anywhere in the world* and is a lot more versatile than a Cruise missile.

*Only if it has planes and enough surface ships to protect it.

I was on the old big Ark in the early 70s, and realise the impact they made but these days not so sure it's that needed

This is the real concern, we have a pitifully weak surface fleet, if we have 2 proper carrier battle groups with sufficient escorting frigates and destroyers, we will hardly have any left for other missions

4.5 acres of mobile airfield.

14 inches clearance either side of the dock, and barely 20 inches clearance off the sea bed. No wonder there's a chief steering her. No inexperienced OD for this job.

Mmmm not so sure. Considering the fast-evolving political situation and increasing belligerence from Russia I would think a stronger Royal Navy would be a sensible precaution.

Carriers are at the end of their evolution, can't see us ever commissioning more.

A new generation of Battleships with railgun technology is where the next leap forward in naval power is.
