.....maybe??

No not Charles Horton or Mick Cash unfortunately but the a driver on the Uckfield line last night.

Turns out the operational incident they speak of was that the driver left the station without the guard on board. He got to Buxted and realised what he had done as there was no one to open the doors.

Been discussed here: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=146680

Knackered the service for the rest of the evening. Last two trains home were cancelled. 2 terminated at Crowborough leaving Uckfield and Buxted passengers stranded causing them to revolt against Southern and refuse to let the train leave by leaning against it.

Huge balls up on a line that can't run DOO currently. Driver obviously forgot that fact and thought he was ok to dispatch the train himself. Given the line is single track in places and has already suffered one fatal disaster on it its worrying that in this day and age things like this can happen.

What's wrong with driver leaving the station with the conductor on board? How is that an operational incident? Aren't they supposed to leave with the conductor onboard?!

The way they treat passengers on that line is unbelievable. Big fan of the leaning on the train to stop it going, I have been saying that sort of thing should happen for ages when they terminate at Crowborough.

How does that help though? Other than waste more of your own personal time I mean.

Because there is no need normally to terminate at Crowborough. They only do it to help their own punctuality figures. By making it clear that passengers are not happy to put up with this, then they will need to rethink their strategy. Also when you get chucked off there, the next train isn't for an hour anyway so your time is already being wasted.

Sack him? They'll probably make him a partner. He's come up with a way to get rid of guards.

No. Uckfield is literally the end of the line so when the train gets there the driver walks up to the other end of the train and drives it back where it came from. It takes 12 mins to get from Crowborough to Uckfield and I guess it waits at Uckfield for 10 minutes so you are looking at roughly 30 mins turn-a-round time. Any delays and more often then not they will terminate the train at Crowborough and start the up train from there simply as In The Rough points out to improve their punctuality figures. There is a bit more to it than that as the line is single track in several places and any delay can have a massive knock on affect as you can quite often be waiting for down/up trains to pass so your train can go on to the single track. But bloody annoying if you live in Buxted or Uckfield.

This happens probably 3 or 4 times a week on a normal week. I can totally understand why people took things in to their own hands last night. Later in the evening there is only one train an hour and there isn't even a pub at Crowborough station any more. It worked as well if twitter is to be believed.

Just far enough away from LDC
Hes clearly managed to run between those stations safely once. Therefore i can see gtr now xlaiming its fit for DOO from now onwards

It's happened many times in the past and the driver certainly won't be sacked

It seems like these employees have no sense of pride in their job if it happens that frequently? Are standards and morale that low now that even staff management and unions as well as most general public just shrug shoulders and accept. What is happening Ernest, you've got insight the rest of us don't. I'm struggling to see how anyone other than the driver and conductor themselves aren't responsible and surely will be disciplined? Appalled to hear it's a regular event, more regular than the timetable by sounds of it.

Is this a trial for their plan to ditch guards and allow the driver to open and close the doors...It would seem they need a train guard

Obviously a big service issue and usual SASTA-type **** up, but the incident itself is not really a passenger safety issue I suppose ? With no OBS, the doors couldn't be opened so no-one was in any danger (except danger of not getting home, missing dinner etc)
