Leicester City have confirmed they are legally challenging a Football League charge of breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules in 2014.

It came as the Premier League champions released their financial results for 2015-16 on Thursday and declared a pre-tax profit of £16.4m to 31 May.

City said they were confident the FFP charge would be dropped.

The Foxes exceeded the permitted £8m loss when they won the Championship in the 2013-14 season.

The club posted a loss of £20.8m but said £13m of it was "allowable" as it included costs relating to the club's promotion and academy expenditure.

The Football League said the case was "ongoing".

The Foxes moved out of the bottom three on Monday after a 3-1 win over Liverpool, their first game following the sacking of manager Claudio Ranieri, who led them to the title nine months ago.

A Leicester statement said: "The club has entered into an arbitration process with the Football League in relation to the legality of the 2012 Championship FFP rules.

"Provision has been made for legal costs in relation to this process however the directors are confident that no further liability will be incurred by the company."

Surely not another club that cheated and went up. I wonder if this part of the Leicester story will be in the movie?

Disgusting yes....most Leicester fans try to deny they broke the rules to "buy" promotion like Bournemouth, QPR and, last season, Middlesbrough. I dread to think what Boro's wage bill was last season, but probably not as huge as QPR's.

At least Howe's mob had the decency to admit they flouted the FFP rules. Leicester also "bought" promotion in 2002/2003, went into administration and then squirmed out of repaying their debts.

Yeap relegation would be a great leveller for them, but just feel it won't happen now

Leicester City Chief Executive Susan Whelan said: “The 2015/16 season will be remembered for generations to come as the season Leicester City changed the game. But those closest to our success – our supporters – will know that, while unexpected, it was a reward for the years of sustainable planning that preceded it. Our business principles, infrastructure and foundations have been in place for some time and it is our absolute belief in our approach that has yielded such a remarkable outcome, albeit it some way ahead of schedule!

Our long-term commitment to financial sustainability includes regular reinvestment back into the Club, keeping it competitive as we bid to bring continued success to its growing supporter-base and the community that has supported it for over a century. We will continue to work diligently and purposefully to build a legacy they can all be proud of.

“The incredible support of the Srivaddhanaprabha family and the King Power Group of Companies continues to safeguard the Club’s future and it remains an enormously rewarding experience for everyone associated with the Club to be part of the family’s long-term vision. Their passion for the Club and commitment to its progress sets the tone from which we all take inspiration.”

Thought we already knew they were in breach of FFP the year they went up?

The FL reported that all of last year's teams complied with the £13m FFP limit, which means Middlesbrough must have complied unless more has come out since early Jan.

Not quite sure how they managed this. BHA were right up to the limit for last season with less than half the transfer fees paid and without massive earners like Downing and Rhodes. We had higher gate receipts as well

Yup, that's TWICE they've cheated to go up.

I was particularly BITTER in 2003 when we were relegated at Grimsby (by 4 points) after Leicester had taken 6 points off us that season, with their Premier League squad that they couldn't afford and went straight back up with.
