A few things from last night

My take (opinion) on a few things:

Bruno - Saturday he flighted a ball over a Reading defender for Baldock to score to cries of sublime etc. Oppo player does the same to him last night and he's to blame. Sometimes it's just a great piece of play, accept, move on.

Tomori - for a young lad, out of position, I thought he did very well, particularly 2nd half - what game were some watching?

Sidwell/Stephens - it's great breaking up play, but where's the creativity? Shelvey looked head and shoulders better and he probably had a quiet game for him.

Sidwell/Stephens/Duffy/Murray - all guilty of being sloppy with very poor first touches on occasions that dropped is in the sh1t (Stockdale semi excused but he should know better)

Murray - Seems to have lost half a yard of pace and when the ball is played towards him, all he does is back in to the defender and hope for the best. Hemed has looked better recently in this respect - has Murray accepted his final salary pension by signing permanently?

Just one of those nights - it happens.

There will be more shocks/turn ups in the coming weeks - this is the Championship!! Would I swap our current position - hell NO!

I think tiredness might have played a part. They went hell for leather against Reading and this must have taken it out of them.

This. Not that long to recover before Sat too. Still, the oppo will be much less demanding of us.

I agree with every point there.

I'll add that I wonder if Murray is carrying a slight knock or strain. There's definitely something not quite right about him at the moment. I'll be amazed if Hemed doesn't start on Saturday.

Really? I agree they looked tired and leggy towards the end but they're professional highly pampered athletes ffs! I just think Newcastle, like Huddersfield, are younger, fitter and quicker than us. I don't know what impact this will have as we reach the seasons climax, if any, but it has been a significant factor in our games against these two.

Well i thought Murray was excellent last night as their defence stuck to him like glue. Great battle with him and their centre backs. Not sure why anyone would conclude he's carrying a knock, bizarre.

If his goal hadn't been ruled out on Saturday nobody would be questioning him.

Agree with all other points.

Agree with most of that. I think a tad harsh on Murray who i think is just knackered. Other than that pretty much spot on.

Yep, I agree with all of that.

I thought a few of them looked tired at the end of the Reading game, so was half expecting a few changes to the starting line-up, or at least during the game. Muzza was one of them and he sounded a bit arsey at times in his post-match interview. Understandable to a point because he was obviously frustrated, but I think the change for Hemed should've come quicker (but then, what do I know?).

One other thing – it looked like Darlow was given MoTM on Sky. If so, that suggests that we didn't sit back or were as complacent as some here might suggest. He made some great saves – on another night they'd have gone in and it wouldn't be all doom and gloom!

Brighton / Hove actually
I thought we played ok last night and was the only team playing for a win from the start. We did our best to score a second and we made their keeper work for it. Newcastle were rarely threatening and their chances were dealt with until their bizarre equaliser. I don't think we deserved being beaten and we could have added to our goals earlier.

I haven't noticed it posted anywhere yet but what a free kick we took in the first half, might have even been the cause of the corner when we got the penalty. I don't think I can ever remember us getting as training ground move almost to perfection.

Spot on - read somewhere else on here that we need to sacrifice somebody so that we can have a dead ball specialist as we did nothing from set pieces!! Your observation above plus Dunk having one cleared off the line while their keeper was flapping (did he really get MOM?) just shows how people and our culture, regardless of what it is, always look for someone/something to blame ;-)

It was a great ball BUT it happened soon after AK went off to be replaced by Solly. Solly immediately went narrower than AK (might have been told to do so). That left a big space in front of Bruno and he always advances up the pitch slightly to fill that gap.

Wanted Akpom to come on for Murray and keep Baldock on the pitch. Also wanted Kayal to ****ing sit right on top of Shelvey and see the game out at 1-1. You could see, for the first time in a couple of years, that the player's heads went down after their (Fluke) goal. If it'd been a wonder goal then I'm pretty sure the players, management and supporters would've accepted it and we'd have not lost our heads and held out for the draw. Loads of twists and turns to come but still in a good position. But not so good for my Championship winning bet... Sob.

Done a Frexit, now in London
Tomori looked really good in the 2nd half, I was sat in the ESU so had a good view, put in some great tackles.

We failed to stop Shelvey. Needed someone to go in early on with some intent and boss him about.

We were bad at picking up 2nd balls and at times out first touch was awful.

Not the real one
We were always in the game, had some amazing opportunities to go 2-0 up. I think the size of their squad, means that perhaps at this stage of the season two games in three days, is a little harder on us than Newcastle. Also their game was nowhere near as tough as ours on Saturday. That said, what can you say about a totally fluke goal? That was our downfall I always thought if we let one in they would really go for it and get a second. I also thought Stephens in the first half ran the midfield and we were spreading the play around very very well stretching Newcastle all over the place, unfortunately we just couldn't keep it up. I would've brought Hemed for Murray about 75 min and also Kayal for Baldock. Kayal did stop Shelvey playing when he came on. Although had Hughton made that sub at 1-0 on 75 min we would have been slated.
Basically this game had very very fine margins. They are a mid table PL team in the Championship and we still have the chance to over take them this weekend. A win at Forest and Newcastle and or Huddersfield have to drop points.

I thought we played well last night, apart from some dubious passing at the back in the last 20 odd minutes that caused a few swear words. Stepping back from my position as Albion fan, and looking at it neutrally, I thought it was a really good, honest, competitive game of football. Both teams going for it, both playing some great stuff.

Disappointed yes, but I still enjoyed it. I can still see that this time next week we'll be back on top though!

I was also impressed by Shelvey. I knew he was good but I had it in my head he was a blood-and-thunder, marauding midfielder who might see the red mist in a game like this.

In fact he was playing deeper than I realised, and played with a calm authority that influenced his team mates all game. I'm a huge fan of our current midfielders but Shelvey is surely the best in this division.
