If Abraham pleads guilty, or is found guilty, he faces a fine of up to £5,000 and six points on his licence.

So that's a £5,000 fine then.

Why does somebody who doesn't have a driving licence even own a Mercedes

How do you put 6 points on his license if he doesn't have one (all allegedly etc)

No licence or insurance is a fine (max £5k) plus 3-6 points PLUS a discretionary ban and automatic retest. In practice the ban is most often automatic but I guess will depend on his very expensive brief pointing out what a very busy boy he is and his need to drive home to mommy in London on a daily basis and whether the magistrate is a football fan.
Careless driving as a separate charge is 3 points on his licence when he does take his test and a £2k max fine.

His brief will cost him more than both fines but probably not as much as his insurance which he might be advised to get next time.

I wonder if this has been poorly reported? It may be he had a provisional licence, but was driving on his own, which then invalidates his insurance (hence the charge driving without a valid licence and no insurance)

Didn't we have a loaned (from West Brom?) a few years back did the same thing?

Jara Reyes, he was already banned for drink driving when Sussex Police stopped him, he admitted driving while banned and driving with no insurance and was given an additional ban. I think he was stopped by Sussex Police in the morning of a match that he went on to miss.

Not quite. Careless driving is the most serious of the offences so he will be sentenced on that. The penalty is 3-9 points or a discretionary disqualification. No separate penalty for the license/insurance, they will be aggravating factors in the careless driving sentence because all were committed in a single incident.
Starting point is a fine but it could go to a community penalty.
For info, No license is 3-6 points, No insurance is 6-8 points (or discretionary disqualification).
Whether the magistrate is a football fan is completely irrelevant.

Or could it be he's had a license had it revoked for clocking up the points in first 2 years?

Fair enough, he'll probably think. That's probably cheaper than getting himself insured as a 19 year old driving a Merc.

Especially as a footballer.... didn't Ashley Barnes used to drive a Smart car and his insurance was still a few grand a year..

If he gets 6 points that'll be 2 more than Fat Sam has managed at Palace.
