Why didn't we play Newcastle today?

We played our 2nd team at Lincoln; they fielded their reserves at Oxford.

So our first XI could have played their first XI at the Amex as scheduled

On an associated point, it did make me wonder if we had won why we could not have played Barnsley on the same day as 5th round as scheduled. Yes, I know it 'isn't allowed' but why not? We have a de facto reserve teams competition for anyone serious about the League so why not indulge it completely?

I'm going to assume the OP and other posters agreeing are either trolling or have their tongues wedged firmly in their own cheeks.

Because that would have meant the utter humiliation of having to put some of our U23s on the bench. We all know that is completely unacceptable, don't we? I mean, they're the U23s, and there they should stay until they're more than 22. Otherwise it would be men against boys, and we don't do that, not at Brighton and Hove Albion!
