Copeland By-election

Jamie Reed has quit as a labour MP forcing a by-election in the marginal labour seat of Copeland in West Cumbria. The Tories and UKIP would both hope to potentially win this seat off Labour.

Should be more interesting than the recent by-elections, I expect the Tories will be installed as favourites to win it.

Labour retained the seat in 2015 with a 2,564 majority.

62% voted to leave the EU in Copeland - the strongest showing in Cumbria.

Interesting.

This is probably giving them more credit then they deserve but I wonder whether rebel labour MPs have identified this seat as one that labour would not only lose but could potentially be knocked down to third. That would make Corbyn's tenure look very fragile.

And yes I realise he quit for a new job and not for political reasons but I don't think the two reasons are incompatible.

If UKIP can't win that seat they can forget about it.

not sure Labour will lose this unless the Tories and UKIP make a pact only one runs, otherwise they'll split the vote. then again a strong Liberal showing could take enough off Labour to let the Tories in. how tactical will the locals go?
