Birmingham away - rail travel

I shall be attending the match at St Andrew's on December 17, travelling from Eastbourne with my niece and nephew who are 20 and 18 respectively (and both still in full-time education). One option is the Seagull Travel coach, but I'd like to get there early afternoon to meet up and socialise with friends.

I know some on here are a lot more familiar with rail travel in the UK than me; can anyone suggest how I can obtain the cheapest rail tickets, and what I might expect to pay for the three of us?

Thanks for any help.

Virgin trains have a great sale at the moment.

£17 each way in First Class from Euston to New St. Bookable on their website. Will need to get to London but should be some good group deals for this too
Good deals for intermittent trains or replacement buses?

I would be careful booking any train tickets with tight connections through London as Virgin won't honour them if the SASTA service is f**ked up and you miss your Birmingham train

This. Give yourself more than enough time to make your connection.

Cheaper tickets available via London Midland or Chiltern Rail if you don't mind it taking longer. Worth looking at the Blues Away coach too, starts from Eastbourne. Usually gets there in very good time for a beer.

Thanks for this, it was very useful. However....

I've been attempting to purchase the Super Off Peak Travelcard so that it is all sorted. The Southern website tells me I can buy this online, in advance. However, when I click on the "buy online" button I get taken to a search page that has tabs for Tickets/Season tickets/DaySave but (having searched in every conceivable place) I simply can't find a way to buy this Travelcard. Am I missing something?

If you put in Eastbourne to London Travelcard zones 1-6 this should work.

Useful returning from Moor Street too - direct trains available to Moor Street from Bordesley station (only open on match days) which is closest to the ground.
