NY Yankees in talks to take over Notts County

The owners of baseball's New York Yankees are in talks over a possible takeover of League Two side Notts County, Sky sources understand.

The Yankees came in fourth on the 2016 Forbes list which ranks the most valuable sports teams in the world, below only NFL franchise Dallas Cowboys and Spanish football giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Their parent company, Yankee Global Enterprises, has been interested in buying into English football for some time and is thought to be attracted by County's status as the world's oldest club, founded 154 years ago in 1862.

Chairman Ray Trew put the club up for sale towards the end of February, and stepped down from his role, but he returned in September with a deal yet to be completed.

Sky sources understand negotiations between the parties, which have been underway for several weeks, are progressing well but neither side has issued any comment.

Now managed by John Sheridan, the Magpies sit just outside the League Two play-off places in eighth but were beaten 4-0 at Blackpool on Saturday.

Difficult to see how they can dramatically alter the fortunes of Notts County under the current FFP restrictions in the short or even long term. But it'd be good to see them restored to Championship level. Grand old club, nice ground, in a great city and a top away trip.

Didn't they have a false dawn some seasons ago when Sven was manager and Sol Campbell signed on. He bemoaned the size of the dressing room and left in a hissy fit.

No I think you'll find they borrowed a kit from Notts County. Or County sent them out a kit. Something like that.

They had pink kit before but it kept running so they asked a player of theirs who was a Brit if he knew of anyone in the UK that could get them some harder wearing stuff and he went to Notts Countys kit supplier I believe. That's the story I have been told.

Are the yankees tied in with Man City ? Also with Frank Lampard leaving at end of their season , and his wishes to go into coaching ,management , would this not be a tie up ?

Lampard will be going to a Sky Sports studio. His sort don't do coaching.

Unfortunately not true, but Americans do seem to obsess over anything that's almost as old as their country, expect some big name chain like applebees trying to buy out the Druids Head or the Black Lion in the near future.

But surely if they wanted to buy the worlds oldest football club then they should be buying Sheffield FC (formed 1857) ???
