External hard drive for MacBook Air

Looking to get the above. Does anyone have anything they'd particularly recommend? As a bonus, if you could let me know whether you think Apple is a brilliant company or a horrible cult then I would greatly appreciate it.

Anything will do.

I don't like drives that need their own external power, but that's just personal.

It just comes down to how much storage you want/need.

(Apple are wankers)

If you only want additional storage, because of a filled SSD, and not an external drive per se, big enough for complete-disk backups, etc, throw a SDHC card in it.
High-speed for preference. (UHS 3)

This. You can get shortarse Sd cards that fit flush with the slot.

I've got a Nifty drive in mine, plugs into the SD slot and looks like it was factory fitted. That gives me more storage as internal SSD in mine was 128GB (mid 2011 MBA)
As for an external USB, I use a Lacie Rugged. Small and fast with some protection built in.
